Re: Now that the dust has settled
11 months 1 week agoRachel is a top jockey no doubt n will have a great future ahead but i doubt any jockey could have done better on see it again last year was best opportunity but just failed this year did get a bad run but oriental charm was finding and cousin casey also fought all the way to the line, not sure if see it again will get another crack next year but there will probably be another boom horse that will feature again as Cape town always delivers some good ones, july has proven recent years cape town form far superior then anyting else in the country And cape derby formline always in the mix wonder if mr Roberts and owners will consider an overseas campaign for See it again
I read an article where Striker mentions an overseas campaign to Ireland and he has agreed to ride the horse. Will try and locate and post . This was before the July so things might have changed.

Re: Now that the dust has settled
11 months 1 week agoLuck has a lot to do deciding the outcome of races imo - See It Again was 'unlucky' for 2 years in a row - last year he would probably have won if the minimum weight of 54kgs for an older horse were introduced last year - this year he found bad luck in running (would another jock have gone to the outside of Oriental Charm instead of trying to squeeze in between OC and Cousin Casey - we will never know, or would he have won the July if OC had not impeded him - we will never know) - that's racing and plenty of bad luck stories abound after any July with the big field, the narrow run-in around the turn and the short straight.
I also thought the Garden Province was a bit controversial - it seemed to me that our champion jockey tried to conserve as much as possible giving Double Grand Slam every chance to see out the 1600 - but in doing that he did run into a bit of trouble himself - so imo we are not sure yet if DGS does get a 1600 - and I agree, it was a great ride on the day to get Humdinger up on the line
It sounds like Striker's problem started when Shoemaker bled and was pulled out of race ? He has to check and lost his position. Like you say Frodo you need a lot of luck to win the July and See it Again hasn't had that .

Guys let's get real here. I know Rachel very well. Her 1st 18 months riding work here at Summerveld were with me. She couldn't even pull her stirrup irons up, sit short or anything when she started. After that she started riding for Wendy Whitehead and Mike Miller. This was before she went to ride for Garth, Alyson or Michael Robert's. She has great hands on a horse courtesy of being taught by her parent's who were good riders( especially her father). I have had a number of appies as my riders( including JP Van der Merwe) and without doubt Rachel is the most dedicated and hard working of all of them but 1st year out the academy and you want to compare her to Pierre? Come on, he is one of the best this country has ever produced. Give me a break. Rachel is very good and IMHO better than 80% of riders around and certainly doesn't need the 1.5kg allowance. It is in my opinion very disrespectful to woman to think they needs this allowance. She can very easily compare to all jockeys at level weights. Compare Pierre to Rachel now? Not yet and even she will tell you that I am sure.
