in these tough economic times it is very difficult to find homes for horses when they retire from racing not to mention that the warmblood breed has taken over as the competition horse of choice. unsound horses and those surplus are put down usually shot. i have not seen or heard of any horses being sent to any abbatoir by any trainer. obviously they end up dead but there is a huge difference between a vet shooting a horse at home quickly and humanely and being enduring the trauma of being sent an abbatoir

we have had thoroughbreds live until their thirties. it is awful to think that about a third of horses dont make it past their fifth birthday. that said we have 15 year old chickens here and a broiler you have as roast chicken makes 5 weeks and the steaks we eat come from cattle who usually make 2 years out of a natural life span of 20 plus. so animals dont have a very good time with people

For me it all comes down to the quality of horses we breed in SA.
Look at KZN racing......you get too many horses already under pressure before they turn for home. These horses are not race horses, they only racing because they might have a chance to earn cause they racing against more low quality opposition.
Some would even battle to win in Ngong in my opinion.
Put yourself in new owners shoes.
You buy a horse for 100k and pay around 15k per month and it might earn you 50k in it's career if you lucky.
Nevermind buying a dud now, once it's retired, they must feed and stable it for another 15 years.Of course they want out as soon as possible.
Race once a week in each province so the fly by night breeders haven't a demand to breed these low quality horses and therefore less horses will have to be put down.
Most owners are just keeping trainers, breeders, jockeys, grooms, stipes and everyone else involved in racing in a job.

1.How long can the Horse Care units keep a horse before euthanasia? The units barely keep their heads above water as it is . How often do you make a donation to your local unit?
2. When there are too many of a species they are culled safely ie elephants, Buffalo, impala. Better for any horse, but most importantly a TB, to be safely put down than left to starve in a field.
3. Go into any part of Equine world to see good and bad. Don't just have a go at racing.

I don’t like racehorse slaughter but I cannot condone it while I eat my T-bone steak.

You are quick to either seek apologies or to tell others too yet you sit on your high horse and throw insults to valued forum members and then you wonder why they don’t post anymore

Bob I removed my comments and I did not attack Goodman I asked a question ? So please calm down , straight forwardness seems to be such a sin in this "game ' where sending horses to slaughter seems quite alright . Horses should rather be shot and then sent to the lion farm it is far more humane than the abattoir My concern is not people its about the Horse .. but it seems like I am commenting in the wrong place . Have a good day and good bye .
