The last race was the Chairman's Cup. This race was normally run over 3200m. Staying races are now getting shorter and losing their Graded status. South Africa will unlikely have a Grade 1 over 3200m anytime soon or never again. Stamina days are over but Erupt by Dubawi is standing here in South Africa. Getting back to the Chairman's Cup, in the 1990s, there was a horse called Regal Satisfaction who won the race by 17 lenghts for Mike Bass. Regal Satisfaction also won a J&B reserve stayers. In my early days, Aquanaut was ending his career. Illustrador did the famous double. Stateway causing a huge upset. Gold Bowl winners, The Monk, Mosszao, Golden Peak, Eaton Lad, etc. Although much later on, I really liked Highland Night.

I think Highland Night's second win he beat Badger's Coast (one of my favourite horses) who came from far back... Highland Night shifted in the last 100+m interfering with a few horses including Badger's Coast but kept the race...
I took my Dad to the course that day...

If Sound of Warning was impeded by a handler, why would you take away her starting stalls certificate? Cant be the first horse to rear in a stalls.
This race to me will never make any sense.
RACE 7: CARTIER SCEPTRE STAKES (Grade 2) : 1200m: Ref 285
Starter: Mr A Blayi Loading time: 1 min 21 sec Runners: 12
Carded time: 17h07
Rescheduled time: —
Off time: 17h08.11
Provisional result: 17h14.26
All Clear: 17h31.21
THE STARTER REPORTED:
a) SOUND OF WARNING (R Fourie) became fractious shortly before the start was effected and was impeded by the handler in the stalls.
b) FAVORITA (R Khathi) stood in the stalls and refused to jump.
THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED:
a) The Stipendiary Board called for a review of the start pertaining to three separate incidents where it was established, on reviewing the patrol film from the various angles:
1) That MERCURY RISING (C Zackey) in stall 14, had gained an advantage after its front gates had opened before the starter released the gates. As this filly had gained an advantage over the rest of the field as a result of this, she was declared a non-starter in terms of Rule 61.6.11
2) That SOUND OF WARNING (R Fourie), which had been restless in its inside barrier, had been impeded by the Handler allocated to her when he attempted to settle the filly. In terms of Rule 61.5.10.2 the filly was declared a non-starter.
3) That FAVORITA had refused to jump and had not been competitive in the race as a result. The Stewards were satisfied that FAVORITA had been under starters orders and did not jump on its own accord and consequently its impediment was due to its own behaviour in the starting stalls and it was declared to be a runner in terms of Rule 61.5.10.3
b) IRIS (G Cheyne) was hanging out from the 400m and proved difficult to assist.
c) GIMME DAT (G van Niekerk) was hanging out in the closing stages.
d) In view of the report from the starter regarding FAVORITA (R Khathi), this filly’s starting stall certificate has been withdrawn and she is suspended in terms of Rule 61.6.10 and until such time as she proves to be tractable with a companion. Suspension dates: 08/01/2022 to 14/01/2022 inclusive). FAVORITA may not be presented for re-passing during this period
e) In view of the report from the starter regarding SOUND OF WARNING (R Fourie), this filly’s starting stall certificate has been withdrawn and she is suspended in terms of Rule 61.6.10 and until such time as she proves to be tractable with a companion. Suspension dates: 08/01/2022 to 14/01/2022 inclusive). SOUND OF WARNING may not be presented for re-passing during this period
f) MERCURY RISING was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Trainer SJ Snaith was advised. (SC)
g) CAPITANA, the second-placed horse, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Jockey A Marcus, acting on behalf of Trainer B Crawford, was advised (DR)
JOCKEY AND/OR EQUIPMENT CHANGES:
a) CAPITANA raced with ear muffs (declared 07h29 on 20220105)
RACE CARD CHANGES / OTHER
a) Nil
THE VETERINARY SURGEON REPORTED:
a) ROLL IN THE HAY – coughing post-race
b) MAJOR ATTRACTION – coughing post-race
SCRATCHED:
a) AMANZIMTOTI – abscess left front. Rule 53.5 applies (declared 09h03 on 20220107)
b) KITTY CAT CHAT (AUS) – urticaria. Rule 53.5 applies (declared 09h03 on 20220107)
c) MERCURY RISING – gained an advantage as the start was effected. Rule 61.6.11 applied
d) SOUND OF WARNING – impeded at the start. Rule 61.5.10.2 applied

There is no doubt that the Sceptre Stakes should have been null and void.

... or the starter needs to be retrained or replaced. The start is all “under his orders”. Should he have been wide awake to have declared a false start?
