TURFFONTEIN INSIDE WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 11 FORMGUIDES, SELECTIONS, PERMUTATIONS

by David Thiselton

RACE 1: Preview: DUKE OF ABERCORN (2) finished third last time over this trip at the Vaal Classic track and the form has worked out well and he can overcome his tricky draw with his good gatespeed and early pace. EAGLE ALLEY (7), a half-sister to a twice Group 3-winnng stayer in Ireland and England, is by Silvano out of Sadler’s Well mare Magnolia Lane who is a full-sister to the legendary four-time Ascot Gold Cup winner Yeats. MANTERIO (11) was green in his first try at this trip last time and can improve and he has a plum draw. PRINCE ALF (12) was handy behind a strong pace over 1600m on Saturday and ran out of steam and he might enjoy the step down in trip here although he has a tough draw. ABIA (14) did not have the best of luck in her attempt at this trip last time and being by Silvano she should be improving. (David Thiselton 2-7-11-12-14)

RACE 2: Preview: EMALINE (15) comes in as reserve and is the one to beat having made a good debut and facing an uninspiring field here. RUBY WOO (14) made a fair debut over 1000m and can improve from a fair draw over this step up in trip being by Querari out of a Fort Beluga mare PURPLE SHADOW (9) has a plum raw with a 2,5kg claimer up and she could be involved over a step down in trip. EMERALD FLOE (5) has earned a cheque in her last seven runs from 1000m to 1600m but does have a tricky draw. CHLORIS (16), a reserve at time of publishing, is by Flower Alley out of SA Fillies Classic winner Athina. (David Thiselton 15-14-9-5-16)

RACE 3: Preview: WESTERN OASIS (4) gets pacifiers on and has a plum draw over an ideal trip in his third run after a layoff. THE SANDS (15) has come down to a competitive merit rating and ran only 3,5 lengths behind Kings Archer when receiving just half-a-kilogram just over a year ago in his only try at this course and distance, although he did have pole position then and now has a tricky draw of nine. MELCHIZEDEK (10) has some good recent form in the context of this race. IN FULL BLOOM (6) is usually thereabouts and has dropped to a competitive mark. TAI GOLD (2) could earn in this line up. (David Thiselton 4-15-10-6-2)

RACE 4: Preview: VAR AGLOW (3) disappointed last time over 1200m but if repeating her penultimate start over this shorter course and distance she will be right there. STARFLASH (5) has run two good races in succession over this course and distance and is drawn in pole. MIND READER (7) has been in good form and has a fair draw over an ideal trip. (David Thiselton 3-5-7)

RACE 5: Preview: SOUTHERN CHARM (4) was impressive on debut over this course and distance and should enjoy the step back down in trip and after the scratching of two horses she comes into a fair draw of five. SWEET SENSATION (8) is in good form and has a good draw over an ideal trip. GREENS (3) is pacey and after the scratching of two horses comes into a fair draw of four. (David Thiselton 4-8-3)

RACE 6: Preview: SOUTH EAST (8) probably needed her start last week and if she has benefited from it she will go close here from a good draw. ALL OF ME (2) goes well for Piere Strydom and should make a bold bid over a course and distance she just failed over last time. CHE BELLA (3) is drawn in pole and was right up there last time with first time blinkers on so could do well here off a two point lower mark. ISPHAN (6) goes well for this 1,5kg claimer and has a fair record over this course and distance with a win, two seconds and a third in seven starts. BIG BLUE MARBLE (7) always has a shout over the minimum trip if starting on terms. STATE TROOPER (5) is capable of an upset from a good draw. (David Thiselton 8-2-3-6-7-5)

RACE 7: Preview: LOUIS GEM (5) has run two good races out of the maidens and having flown up over 1600m in his penultimate start he should relish this step up in trip and has a plum draw. BINGWA (2) was the fastest finisher last time when fifth to the star colt Malmoos in the Graham Beck Stakes over 1450m and is interesting from a good draw over 1800m with Strydom staying aboard. DR DOOLITTLE (4) impresses as a progressive sort who will relish the step up in trip and although he has a high opening handicap mark of 89 he could be up to it. (David Thiselton 5-2-4)

RACE 8: Preview: TARTAN DANCER (12) has come down to a competitive mark and will enjoy the step back up in trip. FLY NORTH (11) likes to be dropped out so the high draw will not bother her and she is only three points higher for her last win. CURVATION (3) has a form chance if able to overcome a wide draw. SHEZAGLO (1) has to carry topweight but has some good form and although both her sire Captain of All and damsire National Assembly are associated with sprinting the former can get them to stay. CONSOL QUEEN (8) enjoyed this course and distance in the maidens and has a good draw. (David Thiselton 12-11-3-1-8)

Soft going - very competitive - utilize the dartboard; for me Starflash overdue and serves at least as a PA banker

Race 1 - Grace From Above comes out of a strong race when probably needing it and should improve to be in the money.

Race 7 - Louis Gem suited by extra today and gets winning jockey back.

Indefinite delay to racing due to lightening.

I doubt that they will complete this meeting!!

I have asked for years and years as to why they start racing on the highveld at 12:50 during Nov-Mar... Statistics show that you are bound to have a thunderstorm in the afternoons...

Open to correction, but didn't former jockey Martinus Minnie get struck by lightning? And on a lighter note, we are sometimes cruel with other people's mis-fortune, apparently they nicknamed him Flash after the incident.
Guessing has never been widely acclaimed as a good gambling strategy.
