I remember Jeff Lyodd riding Pedometer in the July and he dropped his hands once passed near the line only to get caught for 2nd place by Strike , top horse and what a great trainer Mrs Heming was .

Memories Sly, we used to go racing every week.
Sure her horses would always run a bit faster due to training with the Lions 😁

Mrs Barnard/Hemming now she had her detractors and the Jockey Club did their best to warn her off and almost succeeded. There were constant rumours of her doping and who knows how true they were but she was a force to be reckoned with in an era where she competed and beat giants of the game like Syd Laird. My memory is not what it was, but I recall one of the husbands getting beaten up by irate punters who had backed a shorty - I'm almost certain it was the horse Swift and Bold - that was rolled. Mr Barnard/Hemming made the mistake of voicing his opinion that the horse hadn't been a trier and was being prepped for bigger things. Again I could be wrong but this happened at Gosforth Park in one of the pubs on course.
One of the funniest jokes involving Barnard/Hemming went along the lines that on the way back from a European holiday, one of the bags she was carrying was dropped by her which resulted in some liquid spilling on the 747's floor. The flight arrived at Jan Smuts six hours early......

One of the best trainers ever on the highveld, without a doubt.

She was definitely one of S.A's greatest lady trainers, without a doubt. In fact better than many of her male counterparts.
Strangely enough while reading about horses being fed to the lions on another thread I remembered a filly called
QUEEN OF ALL who ran 2nd to the great ELEVATION receiving 13kgs in what was then the country's richest race, The Holidays Inns run over 2000mts at Turffontein.
The story was that this horse was at the abbatoir and when Mrs. Heming heard about it, she immediately took steps
with her float and saved the horse from becoming horse meat.

Trivia for you-I have a painting of this horse bought at a flea market years ago- I'm not sure of the story but was the jockey not put up in a hotel by the owners for a big race(July maybe) and he took full advantage and drank and ate like no tomorrow partying and battled to make weight come race time?

Interesting articles and always a pleasure reading the stories where David trumps Goliath..... The NHRA problems also seem to have started many years ago....Imagine fining a trainer for doping and then losing the case because oestrogen naturally occurs in fillies : 0

......doubt if this is factual.....regular Jockeys were Michael Cave and Armando Freddi
not really big drinkers but Armando did like his food and was a really good cook....but cant see him wanting to binge on hotel food though.....also owner Alec Mcurdy was a bit of a miser and him springing for hotel accommodation must have really hurt.....It is amazing that Armando was able to make the weight of 49.5kg for that July ride as he at that time often battled to make 52-3 kg on a normal race day.....my late father and Armando were big mates and he rode for my Dad when making a come back in the late 70's after a serious back injury.....
