Don't quote me but here's what I think started the bad blood between the parties concerned...…..
Last week at the Vaal Classic track, it was Scotia's birthday and he was waiting to collect his winnings on the 2nd leg of a double on ANNA CAPRI which was the mount of Gavin Lerena.
The horse was deep in the red and when Gavin Lerena hit the front on the grey filly with 300mt to go the celebrations started.
However the Fortune trained BEFORE THE DAWN had other ideas and in what turned out to be a real party-spoiler, the year older filly got up to beat Lerena's mount close home.

...even more confusing is the immediate sanction of Fortune......been plenty on course dust ups between hot headed parties and a hearing was convened before any sanctions taken....what gives the NHRA the right to act without such a hearing......

The Joburg punters may remember that there was a " misunderstanding " between Champion trainer M de Kock and D Maroun on course. What followed is anybody's guess.

Found something going back to the year 2003...……………….
The fine was R 5OOO= a piece, shake hands, kiss and make up.
www.theguardian.com/sport/2003/jul/20/open2003.golf2
In Victory Moon, a couple of Joburgers are bidding to pull off an unlikely South African cross-sport double this week. Dean Maroun is the manager of Hennie Otto and owner of Victory Moon. Mike de Kock, the horse's trainer, sponsors Otto, the surprise one-time leader of the Open and still not completely out of it. And Victory Moon has been backed down to 12-1 for the King George. Maroun and De Kock remain close friends, despite being fined 5,000 rand apiece after a weighing-room brawl.
'Before I started training, Mike was my trainer,' says Maroun, 'and once I started training horses, things soured for a while. The only way to sort it out was to beat each other's brains in.'
'Dean and I used to be very good friends. We had a bit of a scuffle and now we are the best of friends,' says De Kock. The owners of Victory Moon are called The MAD syndicate. 'It's self-explanatory,' says De Kock.
A certain volatility is also a trait of Otto, who once threw his bag of clubs into a river after a particularly bad round in a tournament in South Africa. 'That's why we relate to the man,' says De Kock.

What a storm created by a governing body that in my opinion continuously opens itself up for criticism, not because of the rules but because they are not enforced consistently.
The idea that a jockey could be fined for winning would make many lawyers drool to challenge. Personally I think the ride wasn't the best but then the punting public see's examples of this on a daily basis without anything being done about it. What made this race so special? Why are the rules not imposed consistently with the hundreds of sub par rides???
An easy example is when Legislate won the July on an objection and the following year Power King who was guilty of the same interference in my opinion kept the race.
That the structure and role players of the NHA need to change is long overdue in the minds of the racing public, however there are more and more people exiting racing frustrated that the status quo persists. The continuous articles examining how to improve racing and get people back have become comedy pieces because if the various structures charged with managing racing didn't frustrate people into exiting the articles wouldn't be necessary.
SA racing is like a top football team that scores an average of 5 own goals a week and the manager insists it's because the team needs new strikers. The owners (those who fund racing owners/punters) continuously look on in disbelief while Rome burns.
Enter Mr Fortune who agree's with the sanction from the NHA and as justification for his point of view admits to being able to "give a horse a run" with enough skill not to be found out. I still cannot figure what is more laughable, the source of this pearl of wisdom or the example used. Once again the owners & punters look on in apathy and disbelief.
The latest is that we have someone who could/should have been warned off from racing involved in an on course fracas with a jockey.

Fortune gets suspension
Jack Milner
The National Horseracing Authority have opened an inquiry into the incident.
An interim suspension has been imposed on former champion jockey Andrew Fortune, pictured, after he was involved in a fracas at Turffontein Racecourse on Saturday.
According to witnesses, Fortune came into the weighing room after the running of race seven and alleged jockey Gavin Lerena had deliberately caused interference to Captain Morisco, who is trained by Fortune’s wife, Ashley. Lerena responded and a shouting match ensued.
However, the confrontation became heated and allegedly turned physical. Captain Morisco was well backed and was sent off favourite at odds of 14-10, but was beaten into second place by 9-1 shot Saviour. Lerena rode fourth-placed Garden Party.
The National Horseracing Authority have opened an inquiry into the incident but said yesterday: “After carefully considering the prima facie evidence, the provisions of Rule 91.2 have been enforced and an interim suspension has been imposed on Mr Andrew Fortune, a licensed stable employee and colour holder, from attending race meetings until the outcome of the inquiry has been determined.”
On Sunday, in a move to stem any damage to Fortune Racing sustained by the controversy, Ashley Fortune said: “Fortune Racing would like to apologise for the incident which occurred at Turffontein racecourse.
“Unfortunately, due to the nature of this sport, emotions run high but incidents like this should not happen.”

My eyes are old as I can't see the problem - maybe at the bend - really that horse had every chance to win but did not or am I mad? He should be warned off - He has a list of prior offenses longer than all the jockeys riding at present - So if they don't warn him off what stops me as a punter from walking into the jockey room and hitting a jockey when my horse does not win!! Disgusting
