Mardi Gras ride
6 years 7 months ago - 6 years 7 months ago
Hearing the NHA are looking at a long long ban for Lerena for the Mardi Gras ride.. Seemingly bringing in an outside stipe ( must be because they retrenched all theirs )
From the stipes
When questioned regarding his riding of MARDI GRAS, Jockey G Lerena explained to the Board that his instructions were to drop this gelding in and get cover as he has a tendency to over-race when in the open. At the top of the straight, he elected to track CRIMSON MAGIC (*A Arries) as the kick-back was particularly bad and by slip streaming this horse, it had lessened the impact of the kick-back. Thereafter when he switched his mount out for a run, it hung in from the 300m.
Trainer J van Vuuren was questioned regarding Jockey Lerena’s ride on MARDI GRAS. He explained to the Board that his instructions to Jockey Lerena was to drop this gelding out in the early part of the race and allow him to run on strongly from the 600m. He further added that he was satisfied with Jockey Lerena’s ride and he has also undertaken to report back to the Stipendiary Board on the well-being of MARDI GRAS on return to stables

Doesn't get the cash back, though.
But having said that, looked like he just didn't run on, as he normally does. Maybe needed it?

Didn't Lerena say that MG was an out and out sprinter and wasn't sure seeing out the distance?

Thought Lerena tried his best on MG and trainer happy with the ride. Horse just didn't kick on that day.
Can't see what Gav did wrong.

Outside stipe to carry out the investigation !!!!
What a joke when other jockeys carry out absolute murder and not even questioned. One in particular.

Yup don’t really understand this tbh, was the reason for the thread.
Hearing they are talking about long bans and big fines
Yet dopers get and bad payers get away with slaps and 10 k fines

I must say when I first read about madi Gras ride I thought it was about the ride after the rest where Calvin habit rode it, the finish was a joke of the year,so tame that wouldnot have fought out of a paper bag if put over his head. That was a classic ride of a tame ride after a rest. That sticks in my head every time I see the name.

The Stipes agreed with me ... RE Mr Flood
ADDENDUM
VAAL RACECOURSE : 4 OCTOBER 2018 : RACE 2
He further added that he was satisfied with Jockey Lerena’s ride and he has also undertaken to report back to the Stipendiary Board on the well-being of MARDI GRAS on return to stables.
The Board has adjourned to view the patrol films of this gelding’s previous races.
An inquiry will be opened into the running and riding of MARDI GRAS in the above race.
The National Horseracing Authority confirms that an inquiry into the running and riding of MADRI GRAS, in Race 2 run at the Vaal Racecourse on 4 October 2018, was concluded on Wednesday 14 November 2018.
The Inquiry Board, after taking into consideration and giving regard to all the evidence led, including the evidence from the NHA Veterinary Surgeon, was of the opinion that:
1. Trainer Janse van Vuuren had adequately explained why there was a deviation in riding tactics from that demonstrated with regards to MARDI GRAS when taking into account the bloodwork of this gelding, the hampered preparation of the horse with regards to the lack of grass available for gallops at Turffontein Racecourse and the date of the Grand Heritage being amended;
Addendum (contd)/…
ADDENDUM (contd)
2. With regards to Jockey Lerena’s ride on MARDI GRAS that the kickback and visibility on the day were poor, the track conditions were not safe and the race meeting was, in fact, called off due to these unsafe track conditions after the running of Race 3. Due to the lack of visibility and in order to avoid the kickback, Jockey Lerena had elected, from a wide draw, to slipstream CRIMSON MAGIC, but stay in touch with CAPTAIN AND MASTER which, in his opinion, was the horse to beat.
The Inquiry Board could not be comfortably satisfied that even if MARDI GRAS had been ridden closer to the pace and had not hung in, that he would have been able to reverse the 2.70 lengths’ winning margin that he was beaten by MR FLOOD at the finish. The subsequent performance of MR FLOOD, where he was a facile winner, has also highlighted the strength of the form. The evidence led by Trainer van Vuuren and Jockey Lerena that MARDI GRAS, if he over-races in races, or does not get cover, tends not to finish off his races strongly as was evident in the Grand Heritage where he over-raced early and lacked a finish.
Taking all these factors into account, the Inquiry Board was of the opinion that a charge or charges could not be sustained against either Jockey Lerena or Trainer Janse van Vuuren and therefore took no further action.
