Complete waste of time and money ! The whole idea of helping the punter is complete bullshit, confuse him yes, by helping a few trainers, yes. At who's expense ? The owner and the punter. These few trainers should get a room instead of blowing smoke up each others backsides on TV. Scrap it immediately.

Too many 3rd world mentality comments in my opinion. Staying in the same narrow lane because you don't know how to personally profit from something that may have long term value is short sighted. Part of the problem with the trials is that some trainers and owners or 'in the know ' punters may lose their advantage in misleading the betting. Many don't even watch them or even replays of other races , but feel obliged to comment on their lack of value.
SA may yet get the opportunity to get international horse trade which in turn could lead to increased interest in local racing .Stifling initiatives that are internationally expected in some cases, because you personally have not managed to use them to best value is backward thinking.
Granted , there are lots of improvements to be made to engage the public and BT's may not be at the top of the list but it is a forward move, as is the attempts by GC to get replays up at speed on YouTube etc. You will never engage the public , especially , eventually an international one by carrying on with the mentality on display here.

Message received

All these trainers that moan about Public trials all take their horses to Greyville and Scottsville for gallops at their owners expense..

So what’s the issue?

....the issue is.... that not all owners have deep pockets....and where is the benefit for them....then to top it all the trails are done with no real zest for all to put in a decent showing....seen far too many non triers and also not distance suited for the range types...horses that try get lumped in the betting only to get zapped by the hidden horses....it is a total sham.....:(

The Summerveld Trainers have a Poly track, so yes, they do pay transport @R500 per horse, for gallops at Greyville Poly.
The Ashburton Trainers do not have a Poly, so do not pay, if they take horses to Poly gallops. No gallops allowed on Greyville Turf. The last gallops on Greyville Turf, were with Rivalland's horses, allegedly to check the Turf/surface.
Gold Circle pays Jocks R400 per BT ride plus R100 to Trainer. Each Horse only gets paid the R100 to Trainer for first BT, or if due. No payment of R100 if horse is not due. Bt costs GC R500 per runner.

Today's BT, with 8 runners cost GC R4k. Some very good Social Media advertising could have been bought for R4k...

I really wasnt going to comment on this as it really is going around in circles. The truth however is that clearly barrier trials are a very neccessary part of this sport as can be seen from what happens in Hong Kong. The fact that Paul and a few others got it up and running is great .. but that's where it ends. Pirates and many others have pointed out many times that if you are going to spend money on anything then do it properly. Trials in the current format are nothing more than a show and a waste of time. They need to be conducted professionally in good times and over correct distances otherwise it really amounts to no more than any morning work routine. Its a good idea just really badly conducted. I'm not really sure how they could get the whole industry all over the country to do this professionally but until they do this is a waste of time effort and money . I do think that those who wanted this really meant well. Just poorly executed. Just my opinion of course.

Not sure how much a trial costs in Hong Kong ( nothing cheap there )?But in Australia trainers and owners are having issues with the cost and less trials are taking place

......Bob lets compare apples with apples......Hong Kong is world class and what each and every racing jurisdiction should aim for......there ownership is expensive but rewarding as stakes are prorata the highest in the world....and there you dont need a world champion to be a winner.....there I would encourage each and every chance for a horse to be out of those highly confined boxes in restricted spaces.....to get out and participate in trails.....and the old adage applies.... if you want to do something do it properly....

I wish www.gallop.co.za would remove the trial form from their form lines.
