Water is like Gold
7 years 4 months agoDear All,
You are most likely aware of the desperate need for water in Cape Town due to the water shortages as result of the drought. As part of a Corporate Social Initiative, Gold Circle, in partnership with New Turf Carriers are going to transport 5 litre bottles of water to Kenilworth Racecourse in Cape Town, at the end of February 2018. We are appealing to staff, owners, trainers and anyone who is passionate about horses to contribute 1,2,3 or however many sealed bottles of 5L water towards this project. Our aim is to ensure that we have a full truck load to transport to Cape Town.
Horses require between 50 to 100 litres of water per day. We are hoping that this project will make a difference both for the people of Cape Town, in particular staff, owners, trainers and their families at Kenilworth as well as the horses based there.
The bottles of water can be delivered on a daily basis, to the Distribution department at Greyville Racecourse, or the Gold Circle Admin Departments at Summerveld and Ashburton. The deadline for collections is 16:00pm on the 28th February 2018.
Should you have any questions or queries regarding this, please feel free to contact Robert Harvey on 031 314 1833 or e-mail roberth@goldcircle.co.za

Great initiative.
Understand that there are huge logistical issues and marketing and training schedules, but should GC not consider "fast-tracking" the KZN season? i.e. get the Cape horses to DBN sooner than would be the norm. Relieve the pressure on the diminishing resource!! Desperate times require out-of-the-box actions

Good initiative.
However, I read an interesting article on IOL about how the WC government was informed in 1990 that there was going to be a shortage of water in 17 years time  There was even a photo of the news article.
Seems the WC leadership had their heads buried in the sand on this one.

I cannot understand why they have not built more dams or reservoirs, Scotland gets more than its fair share of rain and snow. There are two reservoirs within 3 miles of each other where i live. We dont need them but they are there just in case.

Cape Town - The South African Weather Service is predicting rainfall heading for the drought-stricken Western Cape late on Friday.
According to the weather service, there is an 80% of rainfall in the province, with predictions of 10-20mm of rain in most areas and up to 30-50mm possible near mountains and catchment areas. The predicted rainfall is likely to persist into Saturday morning.
The forecast comes as the province, and the city of Cape Town in particular, buckles under the drought, with severe water restrictions in place to preserve the last of the city's dwindling water resources. Day Zero - the date when most of the taps in the city will be turned off - was this week pushed back to 11 May from mid-April after farmers from the Overberg region of the province was able to make a donation of 10 million cubic meters of water to the city's water supply system.
