There is of course, the other side of the coin which is rarely, if ever, mentioned here - it's the Owners side. Yes, this is a Punters forum, this is a BETTING clan.
But the other quickest way to kill off Racing would be to completely neglect the Owners. Unfortunately, we just cannot continue to make any and every decision in favour of Punters only.

As much as we need Punters, we also need Owners.

And after spending a hell of a lot of money on providing the horse for Racing, surely the Owner at least has an equal right to have a bet on his/her horse ?

At the point that the first timer runs, what separates the Owners from the Punters, is the fact that the Owner has had to already put in many Rands for that horse and the Punter has not.....

We need to find a balance.

Well said Louis and many of the punters / posters are owners on the site.

I am aware there are mixed views about being transparent, with regards to the well being of a first timer, but i am off the opinion that its only fair the owner has first bite

We are currently going through a breeding process, where its just "pay pay" month after month, would only be fair to be first to have a bite of the cherry (although this unlikely) certainly considering my position

If form was the b-all and end-all of racing we would still be poor because the bookies’ prices on the favorites (who would always win) would be something like 10,000/1 ON. :-)
And for me too, the costs and risks of barrier trials far outweigh the benefits.

Restrictive trade practises,a lack of transparency and protectionism are common in a lethargic industry and a breeding ground for corruption

A very poor saftote win pool and a total reluctance from the bookmaking society to lay big bets on first timers is to blame for owners not getting on ...The biggest disgrace is trainers who have first timers that belong to owners THAT ARE NOT PUNTERS and there are many and some of these sit on the board of phumelela and these trainers PREFER NOT TO COMMENT ..so if the owner isnt a punter then is it the trainers prerogative to withold this information from punters so the trainer can can get first bite at the cherry?

A few years back on TV Alec Laird called someone unknown in his yard a w•nker for claiming a price on a horse before his owner could. The horse did win.
Most trainers do protect their owners.

No Louis, the owner does not have exclusive rights once the horse is in the public domain in races where there is public betting - this arena needs to be fair to all who participate. Owners race for the purse. Consider the following: tracks are closing -not due to not having enough owners, but rather due to not having enough punters.

Very selective reading, Don....

What so many just cannot get into their heads is that Barrier Trials will not change much in racing. It will be a nice to have and that's all. Read my whole post, in context. Some of my previous posts also refer in various other threads, in terms of helping Punters. Our yard goes to great lengths to be honest with the Public , on course, whenever possible.

I repeat - in order for Racing to survive, we need to find a BALANCE. We will accelerate the decline whilst we do not achieve this, between Owner and Punter. We cannot have one way traffic, either way.

If there were no punters racing will still be around in some form or another because one owner will race against another and have a bet together and have a pvt trainer, etc.
Hail the owner then the punter.

You can laugh Mydada - Go back in history and see how horse racing began , it did not start with the Punter thats for sure.
