Cosatu SA vs All Blacks

The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) is threatening to picket Saturday's Rugby Championship clash between South Africa and New Zealand in Cape Town.

According to a statement released by the organisation's Western Cape administration, Cosatu is fighting for Test match rugby to be televised on SABC.

As it stands, only those with DSTV subscriptions and access to SuperSport are able to watch Springbok matches live.

Cosatu, in addition to wanting the matches free-to-air, want SuperSport pundits Naas Botha and Nick Mallett sacked.

"National sports that must inspire the whole nation must be shown live on SABC, as it is a national sport of all the people," the statement read.

"This kind of discrimination will never be allowed in a national soccer match, as the government would step in to ensure it is available live for all citizens.

"This sport has been denied the majority of children in schools because of SARU's bad development programmes and the ministry allows them to get away with it.

"The commentators like Naas Botha and Nick Mallett are outdated and should be replaced. Nick Mallett also has a habit of promoting white players and talking black players down, because he suits the Stellenbosch mafia’s agenda. Mallett should be removed for this racism and clear unbiased reporting of the game."

Cosatu then confirmed in another statement that they would be holding a meeting with SA Rugby in Cape Town on Thursday at 11:00 where they would be seeking answers in deciding on whether or not their protest would go ahead.

I agree that all national team matches should be aired by the national broadcaster.

should be for free as more people will watch and promote the game, but unfortunately its all about the money.

I think that Cosatu and the rest of the politicians who threaten the Springboks as a means to get the whities attention, are living in a time warp. Springbok rugby is not worth getting worked up about, in fact, I think the majority of whities would welcome a cancellation of the inevitable hammering that will take place on Saturday.
