Bookies manipulating prices....

I was with some friends last night and we were talking horse racing....when the question of bookies manipulating betting prices came up..Juba a horse that ran on Thursday at the Vaal in the 8th race, was backed like a good thing, or so it seemed as it's price tumbled down...it is still running and I was wondering, as I'm a novice in this game how much can bookies influence markets and punters thinking.....I would imagine many smaller punters and there are many of them would have been influenced by this and change their decisions, as betting should be a guide for a race....it was an interesting topic and much was said, but no definite answers...we all felt that YES bookies can influence markets....comments and thoughts from experienced people and punters would be interesting...

More likely to be punters, owners or trainers imo

.....also found it strange about Juba....a definite non punting stable and if any one was into the "graft" it would have been a jock that occasionally does the work riding........however the would be schemer..... had another mount in the race and finished a lot better than Juba....

My pet hate are horses that have run once or twice badly in maiden plate races, deliberately possibly, and then miraculously pop up and win at decent odds because of the market judging it on it's previous runs. Do trainers do that on purpose to get the right price? THE COLOUR PURPLE was an example yesterday. In it's two previous runs, we saw a big price drift. When the trainer decides it's going to run to it's potential, it gets backed in like yesterday. All I can say is it must be nice to be an insider.

.....Lucky....been there....9 out of 10 times they come unstuck....if they managed a higher strike rate they would not need to suck the life out of owners and their punters....this game is not as controllable and push button as people seem to think.....I was at the sales on Thursday and a trainer said his 25/1 shot will run a place.....it landed up winning the race....he did not have a zak on it.... :S

Lucky. Lots of horses are green first time out and come on lengths with a run or 2

We've also seen trainer comments on first timers like, "might be too green" or "might make the back end of quartets" and then they go on and win like a well trained good thing at decent odds first time out." Totally misleading the public. So to get back to the theme of the thread, do bookies manipulate prices, maybe, maybe not, but I think there is more evidence that trainers do it from time to time.

...yeah I made The Colour Purple the big improver in the race and was not surprised that it had been tickled up....improved by 25 lengths from run 1 to the next.....plus we do not get to see the work and must have been improving then too....

....most of those trainer comments are pure lip service....I dont bother reading them most of the time....at the sales this week when these okes had runners and came to watch the TT feed they were all hoping for a stake cheque and to run into the frame....how else are they going to keep owners invested with the crap they drag them into from past sales.....

That horse Juba changed owners and was sold with engagement so maybe the new owner thought he had bought Frankel instead of a MR 46 ? Maybe that's why the strong betting support? But we should also look at her last run - much improved with BLINKERS and ask why they were removed in her next start
