And I like the timing of the races too. Getting stuck in with the features first and scheduling the handicaps to last. Good stuff.

THE KZN WINTER CHALLENGE - 20 JANUARY to 24 MAY 2017

1. This series will give the average handicapper a chance to compete for a large stake of
R200 000 per final and Trainers a chance to earn an incentive bonus.
2. Public interest will be generated by a series where there will be a number of qualifying races
followed by three finals (1 200m, 1 600m and 2 000m), the date and venue of which is as
follows:
Commences 20 January 2017 running to 24 May 2017 with the three finals on
Saturday, 10 June 2017 at Greyville Racecourse.
3. QUALIFYING CONDITIONS AND RACES
All races (excluding Features, Maiden Plates & Maiden Juvenile Plates) run in
KwaZulu-Natal between 20 January 2017 and 24 May 2017 will count as qualifying races to
earn points provided that the nett Merit Rating of a horse (after WFA Allowance) may NOT
exceed 94 in the race in which it participates.
A horse that has won a Maiden race in KZN needs to run in ONE further qualifying race
between 20 January 2017 and 24 May 2017 to qualify to be entered to run in any final on 10
June 2017. Horses that have won Maiden races outside of KZN need to run in TWO further
qualifying races between 20 January 2017 and 24 May 2017 to qualify to be entered to run
in any final on 10 June 2017.
4. Qualifiers will run for normal stakes but in addition will earn qualifying points as follows:
1st . . . 7 points 2nd . . . 5 points 3rd . . . . 4 points
4th . . . 3 points 5th . . . . 2 points 6th . . . . 1 point
Any horse that is pre-entered for a final will immediately earn 5 bonus qualifying points
towards that final, subject to point 11.
The more points earned by a horse, the greater the chance to run in the finals.
5. TRAINERS INCENTIVE BONUS - R50 000
An incentive bonus will ONLY be payable to Trainers whose pre-entered horses finish in the
top 3 positions in the final log on 25 May 2017 as follows:
1st: R28 500 • 2nd: R14 000 • 3rd: R7 500
In the event of a tie for first and/or second positions, the bonus payable will be totalled and
split equally. In the event of a tie for third position, the bonus payable will be split equally.
6. Points will be earned by any qualifier finishing in the first six places (irrespective of distance)
and will count towards any final.
7. A points log will be published in the racecard.
8. Three finals will be run over distances of 1 200m, 1 600m and 2 000m on 10 June 2017 at
Greyville Racecourse. A horse must have run in at least one qualifying race in
KwaZulu-Natal (20 January 2017 to 24 May 2017) to qualify to be entered to run in any
final.
9. Benchmarks for the finals: 1 200m - 74 = 52kgs, 1 600m - 74 = 52kgs,
2 000m - 70 = 52kgs, with no restriction on the top weight to be carried. The company
reserves the right to reduce the weight scale if at declaration stage the top weight is greater
than 60kgs and the bottom weight greater than 52kgs.
10. Elimination will be done on the following basis:
Horses will be eliminated according to points earned i.e. lowest point scorers will be
eliminated. In the event that two or more horses have the same number of points, and
further horses require to be eliminated, the horses with the lowest merit rating will be
eliminated. In the event that two or more horses have the same merit rating and further
horses require to be eliminated, then horses which have run in the least number of
qualifying races will be eliminated. In the event that two or more horses have run in the
same number of qualifying races and further horses require to be eliminated, then further
elimination will be by ballot. There will be reserve runners for each race.
11. Pre-Entries Close: Friday, 13 January 2017
12. Entry fees - A trainer may pre-enter a horse to run in this series and pay a pre-entry fee of
only R456 (non refundable), provided that those horses are pre-entered by 13 January
2017. Should a horse not be pre-entered for a final, the entry fee for such final will be R2 000
(refundable if the horse is eliminated).
