Handicapping in South Africa

3 x 3yos running today.
Cathedral county race 6 kzn 3 runs 3rd and 2 wins MR 77
Same race La Ferrari 2 runs 3rd and win MR 79
Ken race 5 Prince Alfred 1st 2 runs 2nd and win MR 77.
These horses hace very similar form but already the Kzn horse is giving weight. Is this good handicapping?

Wondered this many times

KZN form is also said to be inferior to JHB and WC ( have heard Deez say this on TT)

You forgot the other KZN 3yo. 2 time winner running a good 3rd penultimate then easy win last..
MR66
Not a provincial discrepancy just clearly collateral form thing.

With all due respect - MR is not decided by the number of wins and places

Obviously .That's why I mentioned the collateral form thing. Just was stating its form.

The implication of the opening post was that perhaps disparity between the handicapping between provinces using 3yo in the race. The KZN filly in the race wasn't mentioned despite its form in its last 2 being as good as any of the others mentioned. Clearly opinion of the horses its raced against warrant's its MR according to the handicapper. Presumably the same one who rates the other KZN horse much more highly.

A top jockey who rides more work than anyone here for everyone, says that almost every Natal horse is rated 3-4kgs higher than a horse from another centre although in his opinion they have the same ability in what he feels while riding them.

I agree. You see this when for example. a MR70 from KZN takes on a MR 70 from either Jhb or the WC when they race in PE. You also see this on a daily basis when horses from the stronger regions raid KZN and kick the local rubbishes brains in.

The problem with MR when you get rid of the smoke and mirrors is this is a system that firstly works on human OPINION ( line horses, horse ability, ratings allocated for performance ) and secondly human MANIPULATION (amended guidelines and limits imposed on handicappers).

Bring back the Race Figure system and the arguments stop. Conditions races and WFA sort the champs out and the dregs retire earlier.

Is it that our horses are over rated or outsiders under rated?

Probably both but I guess consistency is always going to be a poorly solvable problem as there is, as mentioned, a fair amount of subjectivity in the ratings.
