Was in i think 1985 when Devon Air won and Bodrum and Versailles were 2nd and 3rd. I caught the trifecta and all the swingers. If memory serves correct the trifecta paid 5k and the singers bodrum and versailes r150.00 that was a good amd memorable day for me.

Have had great wins every few years backing at long odds well before prices shortened - starting Gondolier then Spanish Galliard then Dancing Duel then Super Quality and then mega mega win on Hunting Tower last year. Biggest near miss was Young Rake - stood to win R1.3mill - got odds of 75/66/50 to one - and had to sweat for 20 mins to hear the outcome!!! Hoping to repeat this year with Hunting Tower.

Remember the 1st July i played with my late dad.
We punted Gatecrasher and when he crossed the finishing line first, we poured a scotch and toasted each other like legends, only to be told that we lost it on objection (Principal Boy, i think it was).
Havent had an objection go in my favour since, but still enjoy a good 12yr old scotch from time to time.

In 1991 we moved into our new house on July day. First thing I did, of course, was to unpack the TV and installed the antenna so I could watch the July. Cought the trifecta twice that day with Flaming Rock, Al Mufti and Rakeen and bought a dining suite with the winnings. Was I poplar with Mrs H. that day.

Ive never been to the Durban July but I was in Durban when London News shat in with Anton Marcus on board. I was staying at Umhlanga Sands and I remember all the family and friends punting London News big time.
My father bumped into Laurie Jaffee in Durban that week, he told him "break a leg" and then told all of us "thats the omen!"
London News paid for all of our holidays that trip...

It's not my best July in terms of a monetary win,but when Flaming Rock won in '91 I won R55 000.I was 21 and still studying, and it was a fortune to me @ that stage, but it also never lasted very long as I flew my mate and I up that same night to Durban to visit our girlfriends.I was an awesome 2 weeks, but when I got back it didn't take very long for me to blow what remained as I now thought 1 winner had made me the shrewest punter ever.I guess it was my 1st real lesson in punting.

Took some 50's and 33's Dunford ante post in 2005. Won the Jackpot (paid about 8K on the day) with Dunford as a banker.
