Why is the focus on the jockeys rights?
The two considerations are, the party staging the race & paying the jockey and secondly the owner of the horse who also pays the jockey. These are the two parties with rights.....
If jockeys want to be sponsored then they must only ride for their sponsors, wear whatever they like and say whatever they like in an interview.
DO you see footballers with different sponsors on their shirts, Ferrari's driver thanking Dove Soap for their personal sponsorship?
This twak only happens in racing..........a sea of blurry sluge and grey matter

what do the sponsors actually pay for, what do they benefit? normally a sponsor would put money behind something so that their brand/name gets noticed. Why jocks? (honest question, not jabbing).

Don, there is advertising value for Breeders promoting a Sire, Bookmakers for obvious reasons and then there are an array of obscure companies. Free live TV exposure for these companies that only pay the jockey not the owner of the horse or the the company staging the race.
Jockeys sponsorships are either a monthly payment for wearing the sponsors gear or incentivised by the number of winners.
Bob, i do not agree at all with the jockeys opinion that it makes sense on big days....who are they to decide? The sponsor does not pay them to ride my horse on any day. Somehow this has been normalised as if the jockey has a right to advertise for someone while being paid by someone else......

The industry needs to define the parameters as soon as possible. In a formalised way. We had an issue earlier this year at KW whereby people complained about RIAR saddlecloths, and flysheets with the logo.
Then in addition, on a certain G1 raceday, a winning horse entered the winning circle wearing a WSB flysheet. The sponsor of the race had elected to not include a branded flysheet and only realised their mistake on the day when the horse was in the circle. This caused a bit of hoo-ha as I think the rules allow a trainer to then put his own (any) flysheet on the horse, in the case of no flysheet provided. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
I am in no way against subliminal or 'soft' branding such as logo's on breeches, caps etc. It's a case of negotiating and agreeing on the symbiotic relationship. And yes, where there's money involved, there's always trouble!

Re: Jockey Sponsors no more?
8 years 1 month agoSeriously if the product is not directly related to Racing then the sponsor hates his money... More value in local knock and drop newspapers, Radio or Television than a Jockey(or a Race for that matter) - Actually a guy standing at the traffic light with signage will give you more real exposure ... That's why the serious repeat advertisers like Checkers, Pick N Pay etc don't bother with this.Don wrote: what do the sponsors actually pay for, what do they benefit? normally a sponsor would put money behind something so that their brand/name gets noticed. of course Mr Hawaii, so correct, and that is why it would be a good idea for racing to sponsor or 'brand drop' OUTSIDE of racing on a more regular basis.

Anything that sounds like a racing expense has less of a chance that seeing a 3 legged entry in the July.
