Its hard not to generalise
8 years 4 months ago
We all saw the appalling pictures last night of a groom kicking a horse. One can only hope that is an isolated case of total disrespect and decency towards an animal but the sinister bastard that I am makes me wonder if this is indicative of "its just a job" philosophy.....because if its "just a job" and this total disrespect is rife it starts to explain the in and out running of certain horses. Its makes me think how easy and cheap it really must be to get a groom to feed a horse something.
We know of 2 stables that have publicly on this forum highlighted the need for increased security and CCTV. This can only be because they must feel that "something is not quite right in the state of Denmark "- Shakespeare
You see if you disrespect an animal, then you will have zero scruples in administering a potion of happy juice to it......or slow down juice. Add in the low wages and the "it just a job" syndrome and things become really hard to not generalise.....
That picture scared me immensely last night....

If job pays R750 a week you end up with some donuts
Posted the video lastnight to my personal social media
Wasn`t there a champion trainer fined 20k for booting a horse twice recently?

Can't work out the big fuss over the incident last night. By and large animals are treated very poorly in this country. The groom should be dismissed and a charge of animal cruelty laid against him. Why are the NHRA looking for the limelight in opening and enquiry ? Why not police Flamingo better where most horses go down on 3 legs and more horses are scratched at the start not striding out than any other racetrack worldwide.

That was uncalled for by the groom. Work day blues.
But this comment on Sportingpost...
Wonder if we will see this(Think Back).
“In light of the groom’s unequivocal apology, together with the contriteness he has shown, the NHA feels that no further sanction is necessary.
In the circumstances, the NHA considers this matter closed.”

That is perhaps the funniest quote that I have seen in ages
Perhaps transgressors should be forced to wear a red waiters suit for a certain time as penance?

Just go to any training centre on a
Weekend and watch how the horses are
Treated on their walks ???? A stable I was at the Trainer was letting the horses be groomed with a Steel curry comb can you imagine ??? And we wonder why our horses go sour ....That's the main reason why I don't race anymore .
I had to leave my horses in other people's care and after what i have seen and experienced in racing that gave me stress !

Zietsman, a steel or metal curry comb is used to clean a body brush while you are brushing your horse.
Apparently some people do use metal curry combs directly on horses, but usually only on horses with very thick winter coats with caked on mud and the metal comb is used to loosen the mud.
Most horses in training have very short, fine coats. Although they do get washed and rolled (ie covered in sand) after work, it does not take a lot of elbow grease to get the dirt out. A simple going over with a body brush and a wipe with a cloth should suffice, but if you're being super diligent, a rubber curry comb can be used both to lift dirt out of the horse's coat as well as to clean the body brush. You simply tap the dirt out every few strokes.
