DSTV decoders
8 years 5 months ago
Further to the discussion a few months ago ,I don't know why I gave up my old dual view PVR decoder (the one that they told me was on its last legs and they couldn't repair ,if/when it broke)
Well it been like that for years but because it was rebooting, of its own accord, about 2x a week, they convinced me to change!!
I then needed an HD decoder and an explora in its place .............well my new and improved(sic) devices freeze at least once a day, each, and are a nightmare as they take ages to reboot.
To anyone who still has the old PVR decoder ,keep it as long as possible-I wish I'd kept mine till it finally broke!

Hardly ever have a problem with Explora. The decoder could be faulty.

....the bane of reliance on corporate monopolies.....for me DSTV and the big P are coupled on the tote.....Rob I have similar issues with my new Dora(the Explora 2) which I got less than 2 months ago on this price lock deal....far from what was advertised....took more than 7 days to receive it.....80% of installers I called did not do these special subsidized installations included in the price lock deal....almost every few days I loose my catch up titles....I get error messages saying I'm not a premium subscriber and cannot access the PVR taped content....numerous calls to customer care and they blame my installation which I had them do over do when I got this deal....I made them take down a perfectly placed 40cm dish and replace it with new one as part of the deal....made them run new cable and not use the ones that I had for my previous dual PVR....WTF same old sh!t with a new device....I blame the systems and bad management....much like the other corporate that gets my blood boiling.... :S

I also have to reboot maybe once a day I have explora.
One of the lads at the pub had his machine hit with lighting and has been informed that there is not one replacement in Pretoria!
I am sure it's been put down to weather conditions

I also took the plunge with the 'Pricelock' deal - only issue that I have was that I also had to fork out for the 'xtra-view' HD decoder in order to replace what I had - have to say for me it has been an improvement - new decoders do not freeze nearly as often and the re-boot time is much quicker - just shows what we will go through to be able to watch racing

My problems seem to mainly be caused by communication issues between decoders, but nobody can tell me which one is at fault ....I suspect its the HD cos its the older one but thats a guess ......you would think they could tell me!

.....what really irks me is seeing the advertisements for Explora and "price lock deal"....why am I not the happy f@cker whose life has been changed with this good deal....every time the new Dora goes haywire I expect a call from a divorce lawyer....my wife just loves to be at home with me to watch catch up or something that we PVRed....well she hits the bedroom earlier more often while I am left on the phone screaming at some DSTV consultant telling me that I have bad -reception/installation/weather/bedside manner.... :S
.....now that I see that I like many of you are enslaved to similar sh!t....we have been conned ....old DSTV new DSTV same old sh!t....yes my Dora reboots a lot faster but reboots more often.... thankfully not every day but a lot more often than my older decoder....FFS I thought that they had sorted out all this with these must have newer better decoders....and no I will not do the dual or Xtraview I have been planning.... as the problems only seem to get even worse.....

I bought a PVR decoder in 2007 – it has worked 24 hours a day since without a hitch.
When HD sport broadcasts started in 2010, I bought a HD decoder. What a piece of shit - it was replaced five times in the next 18 months.
At the time my laptop also started freezing up – the cause was a broken fan. Thought maybe the decoder’s fan also not good enough.
A small fan directly on the decoder for extra cooling fixed everything – not a problem since.
Try it = may work for you as well.
(husband receives a text from his wife on a cold morning – ‘windows frozen – cannot open’.
He tells her to pour hot water on it and tap lightly with a hammer.
Comes the reply – “computer now really stuffed”)

.......fingers you are on the money.....yes when these threads popped up some time ago.....I advocated the same thing.....managed to prolong the life of my old 4 tuner PVR by using a USB powered fan.....finally it gave up because DSTV has withdrawn any software updates on these decoders and put them on a no repair or replacement programme to force people to opt for explora....pity that these new Explora's still give problems although they get constant software upgrade feeds....

Do you have xtra-view?
The other decoder that is linked to the Explora seems to be working fine.
