If the total stake was then R250k.
1. According to CPI, R250k in 2002 is worth R546k today (54.6 to 119.3) - we race for R1bar today!!!
2. According to US$, R250k in 2002 was worth U.S.$22k. Today we race for U.S.$65.6k. (U.S.$0.0088129 to US$0.065623).
(Is there something wrong with these numbers?)

Hi Mac........your figures are correct...........
.........however the following should also be taken into account..
R250000 in January 2002 = R551294 in February 2016.
Goods and services became 121% more expensive between January 2002 and February 2016.
The Rand lost 55% of its purchasing power between January 2002 and February 2016.

The Gauteng trainers in the national top 20 have been remarkably consistent over the past 10 years- in stakes won order:
2004/5
Woodruff; de Kock; C Laird; Ferraris;Tarry; A Laird; K Maroun; Zaki; Matchett; Pettigrew; Mawing
2009/10
De Kock; Tarry ; C Laird; Alexander; Matchett;Woodruff; Magner;Zaki; Gray; A Laird; van Zyl
20014/15
Tarry; de Kock; Woodruff;van Zyl; A Laird; Azzie; Zaki; C Laird; Mawing; Jansen van Vuuren
Of those that have slipped in the rankings:
K Maroun passed away
Ferraris - has never had a large string, and is at an age where he is entitled to slow down
Only really Matchett and Zaki have shrunk/ packed up from this elite group.
Tarry has risen from contender to champion
De Kock is now a busy international trainer
Successful newcomers G van Zyl and Janse Van Vuuren have expanded
Azzie has had a resurgence with the backing of A van Vuuren.
( I have ignored the " moves" to KZN of the likes of de Kock and van Zyl that retain major Gauteng yards)

Now I'm hearing Tolmay is chucking it ?
Nearly all have said the same thing, can't make it pay with other stables doing deals with training fees ( apart Oom Ferraris ?
On the heels of leading trainer Dominic Zaki leaving the South African training ranks, another has taken down his shingle. Wallace Tolmay has decided to go cattle ranching in the Waterberg region.12 April 2016.
