NHA - RETIREMENT OF HORSES
9 years 2 months ago - 9 years 2 months ago
On 1st look this looks like a positive and it will probably be good news over all, but how many accidents will the poorer and older horses now meet?
Asking your Trainer to "find a good home " is no longer good enough( even though the famous Snaith Case with Johnno lately probably put most us of from that already)
If there is ever a warning to think before you buy then this is it, your 10% in a dream could now be a nightmare
NOTICE TO ALL OWNERS AND TRAINERS
RETIREMENT OF RACEHORSES
The National Horseracing Authority firmly believes that all racehorses deserve to be treated with care and dignity when their racing career comes to an end. Thoroughbred horses are refined athletes and do excel in order equine sports such as polo, show jumping, dressage and equitation. However, they are not designed to withstand meagre or rural conditions and every effort must be made to prevent Thoroughbreds from ending up in circumstances where they would be neglected or abused.
For this reason, The National Horseracing Authority has promulgated a new rule to specify how racehorses must be treated once they have finished racing. The new rule recognises that all Owners have a responsibility towards their horses, whether they have been successful or unsuccessful, and that Owners have certain obligations to make sure that their horses do not end up in unpleasant conditions.
Whilst The National Horseracing Authority is mindful that the additional burden of responsibility now placed on the Owner may be inconvenient, it is certain that everybody will agree that these magnificent animals which provide so much excitement and provides significant economic benefits, deserve careful consideration when their time as a racehorse is over.
The new Rule will become effective from 20 March 2016.

The NHA don't enforce their existing rules so this isn't likely to inconvenience anybody...................How effective have their actions been in respect of horses found to be abused, whilst still in training?

At least we are going in the right direction. I have seen the pictures of horses that raced 11 days before in Kimberly and are already in bad condition after having been sold to bush racing( possibly through a middle man/woman but I haven't been given that name yet by the previous trainers assistant yet even after asking for it). They were shocking( Bob can put them up here if you want) Ashleigh Hughes has been working very hard on this and done a great job already. To some it is just extra money even if for only R2000 they just sell. I bought back Hunger games myself at the last sale just so she didn't end up there. The last thing I need is another horse to pay for especially a moderate one but rather that then seeing her go bush racing and possibly be abused.

Good on you Craig
If people can just realize the pain and indignity these magnificent animals must endure

To many it is just sell and give me the money! Stuff what happens to the horse. That's what we are finding at the moment. Better to put them down then allow them to be mistreated. Far less cruel.

The wording of the new rule is nowhere to be found on the NHRA website. How are we expected to comply with a new rule without seeing the wording of the rule ????
