Oscar,
you are one of the true greats in SA racing no doubt hands down.
I don't see the problem with this story at all though.
If you threw away a microwave and a guy picked it up and started STEERS with it , mazeltof to him....
I mean technically speaking she has an awesome home now. If you and your advisers felt she had to be retired then stick to your decision.
What is wrong is the paperwork not being done correctly.
The best person to seek about this is Marcus Tregoning, up until about 6 years since Marcus advised his client that their horse was KAK and that it best retired or sold. They sold for pennies and the rest is history.......
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Makfi
I can only assume that because you "We decided to retire her sending off all the correct retirement forms through to the authorities" retiring a horse can be subjective so i suppose someone can un retire it. The horse can't talk......many athletes do the same thing.

I wonder what the reaction here would be if the horse was now trained by one of the more unpopular Kimberley trainers ?

Oscar
Well that is entirely your decision and because i very much doubt you will publish every situation only you will know if you follow through with this
Had they euthanised Makfi we would have not had a POOR 2000 guineas winner, we would have had a poorer one.
Also i KNOW you are a racing man and in racing the better bloodlines must survive. Magical Trip is from a good family and now in some bizarre / poor taste / bad call scenario the blood continues in our sport.
And also what a story it will make if Mike gets her to win the fillies sprint at Scottsville.
SO i get it and especially happening to a lekker oke like you its seems kak but after a few dops you will see the other side ....... and heaven forbid if something happens to this filly the new connections are on a hiding to nothing......

Cant say much for the sport when two champion trainers are involved and the owner still get a bad taste.
what happens if this horse runs bleeds breaks down and then Euthanased on Track.
how can MDK or the authorities allow this and preach horses well being etc etc.
MDK do the right thing tell the owner to FCUK off and take his horse with.

I'm shocked at this story,i think you could explain this to MDK and get a re action on this as maybe he is not aware what happened.

Makfi was never going to be euthanised, trainer just thought it wasn't good enough after he had niggles as a 2 year old(mistake).
You can't compare that to a horse that haemorrhages when it runs.

OVER 50% of racehorses bleed, most bleeds are unnoticed and its really not an uncommon thing.

My take on this is the owners of a horse should be the people that decide on whether the horse could continue racing after the sale. So I am presuming this is what this passport that is referred to should be doing. Liken this to a car that is scraped, it may still be running, but this car can not be put on the road again without a full roadworthy. If owners retire a horse surely the NHA can mark it as retired from racing and that is the end of the story? That's where the horse should never become "roadworthy" or more aptly "raceworthy" again under NHA rules. Having said all of this, although Oscar has my sympathies, it seems that there must be another side to this story seeing that Mike de Kock has accepted this horse to train. De Kock is not a battler and should there have been any funnies then I have no doubt that he would have refused to train this horse, why would he need the aggravation? Chatting to one of the guys at the rooms yesterday he says that Oscar withdrew an authority to act for MdK and I am presuming it was over this issue. The NHA should not have the right to override an owners decision IMVHO but once again I have to say again we are only hearing one side of this story. I hope this horse runs a multitude of 6th places, returns sound after every run, and is retired to a good home.

well said, i know everyone agrees this is not doe in the best taste....and of course because its Oscar it makes it a tad worse.
The thing is it could have ended up a sprinter in BUSH RACING and no one ever know.....
