I guess when you as hosts are out of the cup before the pool stages are complete, the media have got to find some sort of way to spend their time and try make a headline to sell papers.........
The Springboks are “shocked and astounded” at having one of their players accused of biting by a prominent British Tabloid and are likely to seek an apology from the Daily Mail.
While the players were still celebrating their 64-0 whitewash of the USA in their final Pool B game, a report appeared in the UK tabloid, the Daily Mail, that showed a photo and accused tighthead prop Frans Malherbe of biting an opponent during the game.
The allegation is one of the most serious that can be leveled against a rugby player and has rocked the Bok camp with the veracity of the attack and the bizarre interpretation from the newspaper of a picture snapped by one of their photographers.
“Biting scandal rocks South Africa after prop Frans Malherbe allegedly sinks his teeth into USA lock Matt Trouville” read the headline in the newspaper and featured a picture which allegedly shows the bite snapped by the photographer Kevin Quigley.
But there may be a much more innocent reason to the whole affair, that the moment the picture was snapped, Trouville was busy cleaning out Malherbe from a ruck and the timing was unfortunate.
As of Thursday morning there were no citings, but the match commissioner has 48 hours to decide if he does want to cite a player. The Boks are confident that after watching the footage again, and speaking to both players involved, that the incident is nothing more than an allegation.
“There has been an allegation that one of the players bit another, and it is an extremely bad one to make,” Team manager Ian Schwartz told supersport.com.
“There is a still photo that alleges this and the headline says “Scandal” and says Frans ‘sinks his teeth in’. This is strange as Frans was wearing a mouthguard at the time and the player involved from the USA does not remember the incident either and was wearing shoulder pads.
“Of course any still photo can be manipulated to look guilty, and if this was the basis, then every scrum photo would look like players head-butting each other.
“We are obviously shocked at all of this, but we are in the hands of the system and we respect the process that it place. I’m 100% sure that after the allegation the citing commissioner will have a look at the incident and I’m 100% sure justice will prevail.
Schwartz said upon being alerted to the incident, the team has already written a letter to the newspaper asking for a retraction and apology.
“We are really shocked about this. An allegation of this nature can do extreme reputational damage to a player and could be held against them for a long time to come,” Schwartz said. “We feel it is ridiculous and our focus is not on it, but we believe Frans is not guilty until proven otherwise.
“We know the citing commissioner will have a look at the incident and we will wait for his outcome before we take this further.”
The newspaper alleges that Malherbe could be expelled from the World Cup if found guilty, and cites the incident back in 1994 when Johan le Roux received an 18 month ban for biting the ear of former All Black captain Sean Fitzpatrick.
