Shocking, time for racing to clean house and get rid of any repeat offenders and harsh punishment where not an honest mistake.

Trainer banned as he and his horses test positive

BY PAUL EACOTT 17:20PM 30 APR 2015

Australia: Trainer Luke Griffith was disqualified for four years after he and three horses in his care tested positive for the recreational drug methamphetamine, also known as crystal meth.

Griffith was given a three-year ban for the horses returning positive results following wins in January and February with a further 12 months added to the punishment for testing positive to prohibited substances himself.

"I have personal issues that I'm working through," Griffith told Racing NSW stewards during an inquiry.

Another Halo and How Will I Know tested positive to methamphetamine, a central nervous stimulant, before winning their respective races at Tamworth on January 18. Incensual had a positive swab to the same substance before winning at Taree on February 3.

Stewards found Griffith did not deliberately treat the horses with the illegal drug, but said the fact they won races with it in their systems was an aggravating factor in the case. All three have been disqualified from their wins.

"I'm just absolutely shattered," was Griffith's only comment as he left the inquiry.

The trainer had provided officials with urine samples at Tamworth races in March and April and both times the results were positive to banned substances including methamphetamine. His staff were also tested and while one returned a positive to cannabis, they were all negative to crystal meth.

It was the fourth time Griffith had breached the rule governing banned substances in the past 15 years. Griffith's ban will start on May 8 giving him seven days to maintain the care of his horses and find them new trainers.
