Surely The Greatest Ever
10 years 4 months ago - 10 years 4 months agoTo borrow a phrase, it was 'Secretariat first, the rest nowhere' as America's equine legend joined the immortals with an astounding 31- length victory to complete his Triple Crown. Secretariat started at a sprinter's pace and just kept on relentless, moving further and further away from overmatched rivals as he pushed the boundaries of what had been thought possible for a thoroughbred.
At halfway, he clocked 1min 09 4/5ec, more than a second and a half faster than the current track record for 6f at Ascot. By any normal reckoning, at that stage Secretariat should have started treading water. Normal standards rarely applied to Secretariat, however, and racecaller Chic Anderson's commentary has become the stuff of racing history. “Secretariat is blazing along,” he shouted. “The first three-quarters of a mile in 1:09.4/5. Secretariat is widening now. He is moving like a tremendous machine!”

On that day, Secretariat returned split times that no horse will ever match.
Breathtaking... when I watch the race and knowing the workload prior to that (last 2 wins and work he had missed with abscess), I feel shivers running down my spine.
The race makes me feel ALIVE.

These old films give me bumps, so wish the public would embrace horse racing like they did in the old days

Sensational!
I'm going to the Belmont Stakes this year. Don't think I will be seeing a triple crown attempt (fingers crossed though) but should be a great experience nonetheless.
