Charity Mile
10 years 7 months ago - 10 years 7 months ago
Trainer Geoff Woodruff has lined up all of his big guns to be aimed at the
R600,000 Peermont Emperors Palace Charity Mile over 1600m on the
Turffontein standside track on Saturday 1 November.
Woodruff has seven runners among the 30 nominations for the Grade 2 race
and they are SASCOC Triple Crown winner Louis The King, Rake’s Chestnut,
Tellina, Master Sabina, Killua Castle, Lockheed Jetstar and Sabadell.
Louis The King has not raced since finishing unplaced in the Vodacom Durban
July but Rake’s Chestnut made his seasonal debut in the Grade 2 Joburg
Spring Challenge earlier this month and finished unplaced.
Alec Laird has nominated four runners and they include As You Like, who was
placed in all three legs of the Triple Crown races behind Louis The King.
Laird’s other entries are Bouclette Top, Bezanova and Gitiano.
There are three entries each from Sean Tarry and St John Gray while Mike de
Kock has two nominations. Tarry’s entries are The Hangman, Tiger’s Retreat
and Mercado while Gray has entered three in-form runners in Glorious Jet,
Everest and Norgay.
One entry who is sure to attract a lot of interest is Emerald Cup winner
Tommy Gun. It will be interesting to see whether the Corne Spies-trained
runner is as effective on turf as he is on the Vaal sand.
No Worries from the Gavin van Zyl yard held off the Mike Bass-trained
Midnight Run to win the Joburg Spring Challenge and the two could meet
again in this event.
The fairer sex are also well represented by four talented entries. Robbie
Sage has put in Grade 2 Gold Bracelet champion Jet Belle, who is a six-time
winner, Joey Soma has gone with Grade 1 SA Fillies Classic winner Athina,
Johan Janse van Vuuren has nominated last year’s Emperors Palace Ready To
Run Cup champion Winter Star while De Kock has entered talented Santa
Carolina.
The Charity Mile is unique in that each of the 16 runners will be
represented by a celebrity and a charity with R550,000 to be shared between
them. The charity represented by the winning horse will receive R100,000
but no charity will go home empty-handed as even those represented by the
last five home each get R20,000.
Supplementary entries close at 11am on Friday after which the weights will
be announced.
Declarations close at 10am on Wednesday 22 October. The final field and
draws will be announced at an event later in the day.

Turffontein Racecourse kicked off the countdown to the 10th edition of the Peermont Emperors Palace Charity Mile (PEPCM) in partnership with Racing. It’s A Rush by hosting a successful educational afternoon on Wednesday, 15 October 2014.
The bad weather didn’t deter the day’s proceeding as some of this year’s PEPCM celebs Sarah Kate Scot, Clive Maistry, Hayley Owen and Fiona Nay took time out of their schedule to spend time with children from the Fortune Kunene Primary Aftercare.
The day’s event kicked off with special pampering for the children which included pony rides, face painting and balloon. The children also enjoyed one on one interaction with a couple of celebrities who have generously backed the charity racing spectacular.
Bob Yearham, Peermont COO for Gaming commented “Peermont donates a sizeable amount annually through ongoing Corporate Social Investment and Responsibility projects, with a core focus on education, community upliftment, youth and entrepreneurial development. The Charity Mile is a unique event that aligns with our core business philosophies, bringing hospitality, gaming, and famous people together in aid of those less fortunate.”
Phumelela Gaming’s National Marketing Manager, Michael Varney said “We are extremely excited for this year's installment of the Peermont Emperors Palace Charity Mile; our partners Peermont continue to show their support of both the sport of horse racing as well as the charities that benefit from this epic day at the races!".
Below is the full list of the 16 charities that will benefit from the raceday on Saturday, 01 November 2014:
1. Animal Anti Cruelty League
2. Maphanzela Primary After Care Centre
3. Welamlambo Primary After Care Centre (Orphanage)
4. San Michele
5. Reahile Primary After Care Centre
6. Umkhathize Primary After Care Centre
7. Fortune Kunene Primary After Care Centre
8. Jongimfundo Primary After Care Centre
9. Nageng Primary After Care Centre
10. Khangezile Primary After Care Centre

12. Peermont School Support Programme
13. Izanokhanyo Home
14. Thembakazi Primary After Care Centre
15. National Horse Trust
16. Star Schools
Be sure to join South Africa’s top celebrities as they glam things up, all in the name of charity and make a difference in the lives of the less privileged. To be part of the action, head down to Turffontein Racecourse on Saturday, 01 November.
Gates open at 11AM and entry is FREE. A children’s play area and a live tribute show to the Bee Gees will be on offer throughout the day.

Might be an idea to link our Charity compo to those Charities? So perhaps if you enter you nominate one of those 16 listed above?

PEERMONT EMPERORS PALACE UNVEILS THE BARRIER DRAW AND CELEB LIST FOR THE 2014 CHARITY MILE
Owners, trainers and a bevy of celebrities representing their charities were on tenterhooks at the Peermont Emperors Palace Charity Mile (PEPCM) Barrier Draw function held today (October 22) at Emperors Palace.
The final field of 16 horses for the Gr 2 R600 000 event was announced at the function and this was followed by a ceremony to determine the barrier draws for the race as well as the celebrity and charity that each runner will be representing.
The PEPCM race will run on November 1 at Turffontein and the finishing positions of the horses in the PEPCM will determine what portion of R550 000 will go to each of the 16 represented charities. A climax from the event was talk of increasing the charity total to R1 million in next year’s PEPCM.
Tension ran high as trainers were similarly keen to see their horses landing a favourable draw, while the charity representatives were obviously hoping for a fancied horse. In respect of the latter, the Triple Crown hero Louis The King was sure to be the one that would draw the biggest celebratory cheer, despite being drawn at 17 and in the end it was the Fortune Kunene Primary Aftercare Centre that was randomly selected to be represented by the great Geoff Woodruff-trained horse.
The PEPCM is a very exciting occasion for both the representatives and benefactors of the charities involved. The charity represented by the winning horse will receive R100 000, but none of the charities will go home empty handed as even those represented respectively by the last five finishers will receive R20,000 each.
On the day each runner in the PEPCM will be publically represented by a celebrity and a media partner. The tradition not only adds a lot of glitz and glamour, but also gives the public a chance to rub shoulders with their favourite stars who they normally only see on TV screens.
This eagerly anticipated race meeting also features the R3, 85 million Emperor’s Palace Ready To Run Cup, the Gr 3 Graham Beck Stakes, the Gr 3 HSH Princess Charlene Starling Stakes as well as the two richest Maiden Plates in South Africa worth R250 000 each. Racing. It’s A Rush will help drive this charitable cause right up until race day on November 1 at Turffontein Racecourse.
The gates for the race meeting open at 11h00 and entry is FREE. There will be a children’s play area on course and adding to the entertainment will be a live tribute show to the Bee Gees. To book a table call Agnes on 011 681 1702.
