TOTE FRAUD - WARNING TO ALL PUNTERS
10 years 7 months ago
I normally take my Pick 6 at the tote at World of Sport at Verulam. On Saturday the tote at World of Sport was offline so for the first time in my life I drove down the road and took my R 300 (JHB) pick 6 at another tote at Railway Hotel also in Verulam. The ticket was a winning ticket. After the 9th race at JHB I went to World of Sport to cash my ticket. The teller tried a few times and the ticket was not paying. We checked the numbers again and it was a definite winning ticket. The teller then called the manager and after some investigation they advised me my ticket was cancelled. They told me to go back to the place where I took the bet and find out what was happening. They also warned me that the place where I took my bet was running a scam and cancelling bets as they heard of a few cases. I immediately drove to Railway tote presented my original ticket and demanded payment. After sever minutes of discussion the Manager a certain Mr Jay advised me the he can't trust his staff and indeed my ticket was cancelled. He ask me to come back the next morning around 10 and he will try to sort out something. The next morning around 10 I was at the tote and the manager was not there however he left R 2000 with the staff. I took the R 2000 and took another pick 6 to the value of R 1 150 (being the shortfall) for the Sunday meeting at Greyville and warned them not to cancel this ticket. This situation is unacceptable and how do we the punter trust that our bets are valid. What if the Pick 6 paid R 300 000 then who would bear the loss. I still have my original winning ticket as the staff who gave me the R 2000 did not ask me to return the original ticket. I have launched a complain with Gold Circle and am eager to see what happens. I am punting for 30 years and this incident has simply made me lose my trust in the tote.

It's a common thing, been happening in tote and bookmaker shop for many many years.
What gets me is that they still allow the person to work there for as you say the site owner is aware of it. as for having the original ticket. I know here in Western Cape. if your ticket is canceled and you still have said ticket in your hand and its not been defaced that its a canceled ticket the WCGRB will tell the Bookmaker or Tote to pay you out.
So as you said what if it was a R300 000 ticket.. u just stroll off to the Gambling board tell the story .

Most TAB outlets in KZN are agencies who get a commission based on turnover.
It would be in the best interests of the punter if these agencies that continue to employ fraudsters were shut down and taken over by Gold Circle.

I thought the teller had to retain the cancelled ticket with the original - Has this changed?

NO.. tellers must still keep the canceled Ticket if its canceled. otherwise they are liable for the missing ticket. like i mention if client goes to Gambling board it'll be in his favour.
Reason they get away with it is that Phumulela or GC probably hardly audit their those Agencies. and its kept hush hush.

Hunter's Retreat in PE is an Agency.
The Tellers say they see the Tote Area Manager maybe once every 2-3 months.
Waste of time!
