Interesting article ,and seems to follow a pattern..............sports believing they will get more people to come along and observers saying, "take the event to the people"
Seems to be a general stubbornness to try to prove that advice wrong!

yes yes yes and blah blah blah. Why is the Mugg+Bean full every weekend. Perhaps if the stadium had a Mugg+Bean...Primi Piati or Wimpy? just sayin'. Atmosphere. Wi-fi. Good food. And racing - imagine News Café at the track?.

Imagine at Kenilworth on the deck - a News Café.

test matches in England are sold out a year before the match (first 4 days). No crowds go to tests in New Zealand, Zimbabwe, UAE (where Pakistan play their home matches) and in the West Indies where they try and play test cricket on all the islands the grounds are only full if the home side are doing well. I went to the world cup there and it was a disgrace that most of the locals were priced out of the matches. St Georges Park should get a full house for the Boxing Day test (fantastic that they took it away from Durban where only the first day is a full house). India have been suffering with test match attendances since the IPL came to town and Sri Lanka only fill up for the one dayers. Australia get good crowds (well they are the best in the world so they should)

I was just saying today to a friend today that I have not watched a game of cricket since the whole Hansie Cronje debacle. I used to watch it all the time, I loved cricket. Now I would not be able to name four players in the South African team. I know the names of local jockeys, trainers and horses better than the names of local cricketers and soccer players.

Slightly off the point but am well aware that Golf Clubs, some well known, are battling .
Clubs have now cancelled membership entrance fees and visitors very welcome anywhere.
A round of Golf these days is not much change from 4-500 rand ,with Cart,Green Fees,Snacks and Drinks.
The extra disposable income just ain't there!

talking about golf

in our village we have an award winning restaurant which was sold and bought by some hot shot chef from Edinburgh. He has tweaked the menu and stuck up the prices by up to 50%. Needless to say only the haves now eat there. So here is where the golf comes into it

At our local course they have a restaurant which serves good food at reasonable prices. Prior to the restaurant been taken over one could just walk into the clubhouse and ask for a table and 9/10 you would get one. Now you have to book but what they have done is that you must be a member to eat there. Not a member of the golf course but a member of the restaurant and for that pleasure you must pay £30 a year as they know people who have stopped frequenting the restaurant will either eat at the pub or the golf course. You get ripped off wherever you go.

The winners are the local pub as they are now doing a roaring trade on food.

The interesting thing is that in depressed times ,history has shown that the gambling industry is often less affected................I guess that "winning" is an inviting and desperate option to lack of earnings!

You are correct.
I remember years ago my mum came into a windfall and with the money she bought shares in Ladbrokes and Mecca,50/50.
My Dad,so called Stock Exchange expert ridiculed her selection.
She turned to him and said that in hard times people would bet to win some money and they wanted to be entertained to forget the bad times.
She was absolutely right.
