Must be difficult explaining odds to newbies

Race 2 at the Big T
55/1 on the tote unraced, bad draw etc
How do you explain results like these to guys that have never punted?
Why would they stop punting soccer and move to racing?
Bingo?

no need to explain. People automatically assume it's an inside job. Well done in helping bring people to racing.

The same way you explain the result when Stoke beat Man City (at home) the other day - shit happens

Don,as a participant in the "it's a rush" campaign ,I am amazed (or not) at your response!
It is the "no need to explain" stance that leads to the assumption of inside job!!!
Racing has had an unfortunate image for as long as I have raced and should surely be working hard to improve that picture.
VISIBLE regulation and transparency is vital...............barrier trials and public timed work would be a start!

Definitely no insider information here race 2.
1st timer at the races WINNER went from 14 / 1 TO 40 /1 so it shows " not even the stable new this one was going to win " thats for sure.

Rob, you know our stance on transparency and communication is just that - but being a participant is just that too - we don't control the strings (perhaps if we did, the scene would be different! there would be trials and press for sure) The post was made in jest - how do you explain those odds and a first timer that wins. Exactly - HOW do you explain that? and HOW do you explain SAF racing allowing first timers in a race that has betting??

Elvis, we know - we've been watching this for a while now - its when the odds shorten - shortly before the race. Worrying. It happens quite often. In fact, once is too often.
There should be no blind spots. Not where the outcome is price sensitive.

The point here is exactly as Frodo says "shit happens" and it happens in all competition ,and racing would be pointless if it was completely predictable............of that there is no doubt.
The point ,if I understand Bob,is one I agree with, and that is that you cannot entice new punters if you expect them to have the experience and understanding of us seasoned victims..........lol
Try an interesting test...............try and explain to a newby how you select your horses for a meeting and then try to explain the races where form makes absolutely no sense, in a way that keeps him interested, and prepared to come back for more!
That is the task of introducing new turnover!!!!!

a long lay off or unraced horse that wins with odds shortening is not 'shit happens'.
the cost to the sport in loss of followers is far more than the cost of punts on a more informed market.

Don,you cannot have an initiative without the support of the entire industry ,particularly the area relating to regulation (trust). It has to have the support of those that "control the strings"
