Can someone please educate this learner as to how weights for Novice Plates are determined? In the old days all horses carried level weights in the race, except for sex and wfa allowances.

Don't worry Winder, Iv'e been racing 40+ years and that's the way I understood it too.
Cannot find reasons for the variations or why and when it changed!

Basically 0.5kg reduction for each unplaced run that's not in a feature.

Thanks Craig!
I would have thought there were enough handicap races without including an element to novice plates.
I wonder when we will get some reaction to the recent handicapping review?

Thanks Craig. I am looking at the Novice Plate field in today's 8th race and it still doesn't make sense to me.
Do people agree that for the sake of transparency the conditions of a race ought to be printed in race cards and form guides?
