Prosthetic Legs for horses

A friend of mine's daughter is busy with a 3 year diploma on building of prosthesis, she is a very good student scoring A grades all the way and also the best student of her year last year.

She is interested in building prosthesis for animals ( they recently build a prosthesis for a buck and a few dogs) and specifically for horses
so we found this article on line

I said to her I would do a bit of research about this on ABC hopefully we can get some answers to her questions.

1) If a horse break down say during a race can the horse be saved by amputating the broken leg and build a prosthesis? especially in the case of a well bred filly or potential sire or just that the owners love the horse and don't want it to be put down?
2) or is it better to just put the horse down?
3) will their be a need for prosthetic legs for horses ( if so she would like to focus on that in her 3rd year)
any input on this will be welcome and I will relay all info to her
thanx in advance for your contributions.

From my sixpence knowledge, horses require equal pressure on all fours, else a high risk of laminitis will set in ...

I would more be asking vets than trainers...but from all I've read and heard...virtually impossible to rehabilitate a break, much less an amputation....

I think poor circulation to their lower limbs might cause problems. That's what stops broken legs from healing. If you think of it, a broken leg in the wild is a death sentence ... even if the horse lasts a few days the wolves will be on to it before it has time to heal.

But I'm also not a vet ... just something I heard.

It can be done and has been done , but don't know if Thoroughbreds can cope as well as smaller horses,
and other breeds that I have seen with a Prosthetic Leg . Google horses with Prosthetic Limbs its enlightening !
