I am sure Nicky Roebuck is a great guy but he couldn't be categorized in the same division as Felix. As a jock he was no great shakes and I am being kind here. Is this really the best we could do as a role model and teacher at the academy?

The Stig wrote: Almost all jockeys turned trainers are very poor trainers
Roberts-legendary champion jock but poor trainer !No excuses,he got the support but wasted it.
Van Zyl- Poor/average jock, if it wasn't for chestny he would be also poor trainer, got the biggest owners but mostly chestny win the big races.
Gadsby- just plain poor
Basil marcus -champion jock but average trainer, son also better than him
Botes- average to poor, plenty empty stables
Lucky- one hit wonder with JJ but otherwise poor/average
Puller-Champion jock but average trainer
Hill-top jock , poor trainer
James Maree- pathetic trainer
So why will felix change it , jocks know what to do on the horse but have no clue how to enforce it to a workrider.
Speak your mind if you disagree ,but back your opinion up with facts

Dear Dave,

Merry Christmas and Happy new year.

Thank you for another year of ABC, just would like to point out a few facts that your wonderful patron the Stig wrote on the post under Felix about jocks being poor trainers.

Gavin Van Zyl has consistently produced the goods and been one of KZN leading trainers for a few years and has produced many top horses Slumdog Millionaire, The Appache and Along Came Polly.

Muis is really starting to churn out the winners and his horses look great.

Lucky is always in the winners box and produced JJ The Jet Plane, who was amongst the top sprinters in the world in his year.

As for my Dad 2007 joint second highest win % in CT, 2008 same win % as the leading trainer in CT, 2009 Highest win % in CT. The only trainer to win the classic quartet Cape Classsic, Selengor, Guineas and Derby, and it’s a surprise that Jay Peg remains the highest earning horse in SA history, lets not forget Desert Links, Majestic Sun, Red Rake, Gone Wild, Tassie Belle etc.

Opinion is what the game really needs but posts based on incorrect facts should be managed and or filtered.

I do appreciate the good ABC does do for the industry but nastiness is unhealthy and certainly does not represent you and your team.

PS. I always write thank you if I see positivity concerning my family.

Best Regards,

Glenn Marcus

...
and the reasoning ... as to who or what qualifies as a great trainer/tutor/role model...??? flawed at the very least...

How many top football managers were superstar players? How many Springbok caps did Jake White earn as a Rugby player(NONE)? Let's give the guy a chance before we pass judgement (I'm of the opinion that though riding races can be taught a natural horseman will always find his way to the top so as long as the basics are there and a SERIOUS WORK ETHIC is instilled we will find good riders emerging)

exactly...as Mr H alludes...being a great does not translate to being a good coach/trainer/statistician/strategist/mentor...etc...

Will his son Daniel follow in his father's footsteps and join The Academy, one wonders.

Another Coetzee to continue the family trade ?

Jake White started coaching at a schoolboy level before becoming Springbok coach after going through the various levels. Being an ex Jeppe boy myself you wont find me criticising Jake. Insofar as work ethics are concerned, you wont find a better example than Felix. If you are to believe the rumour mills, Felix became frustrated by the lack of work ethic at the academy.

I too am an old boy and he was my PT teacher for a term -
I was trying to make the comparison that you don't have to be a top sportsman yourself to be a top coach - I just feel we don't give people a chance in Racing before we find a reason to knock them - Roebuck has hardly put down his bags and he's being shot down

I must also declare that I have never met or spoken to this chap so I am unbiased

What a small world Mr H. I matriculated in 1973 and was a boarder at Oribi. Nothing is too difficult for the brave ;)
