Current 3 year olds

So what have we learned up until now about our current 3 year olds? Are they a bumper crop like we thought in the beginning or are they just average?
As far as i can think, the only 3 year old to run against older horses in a feature race has been Red Ray who ran in the sprint the other day.

I was of the opinion that Captain America was going to be a world beater and that, if taking his place in the Met, he would be a serious runner.

I still think he is very good and if the Derby was to be re-run, no way he loses to Legislate even though Legislate may be way above average too.

Then there is Mister Cricket. He may be the most exciting of them all..........but we just don't know yet.

On the Red Ray run I have to assume that our 3 year olds are above average but there i no way to know until they cross swords with the older brigade in KZN or perhaps later in the Highveld autumn racing season.......

What do you think?

Red Ray also ran in the QP and was soundly beaten - I think the crop may be over-rated, but still better than last year's - but it's early days - I think we will be able to tell after the Gauteng and KZN seasons - by which stage they wiil be 4 yr-olds of course :S

I don't think there is enough 'evidence' to judge one way or another - my PERCEPTION is that a lot of 'promising' 3 yr olds are getting beat by 'moderate' older horses over ground in handicaps

Only way (imo) to judge how good (or not) a particular crop is, is to measure the top ones from that crop against older generations at weight-for-age; now for me we had only one such event (open to correction) - the QP where Red Ray made an appearance - yes he was soundly beaten but I don't think one can judge the whole crop by that single case - he may not be at best over 1600, or he may have had excuses - so that's why I say that the jury is still out ......Whistle Stop did look impressive in Gauteng, but flopped in Cape Town (not at best?); Legislate and Captain America beat each other, Lance looks good, but also fluffed his lines the other day, Mr Cricket not exposed, and so on :S

Guys, i am not giving up on Mr Elly's Dynastic Power just yet. I think this is a TOP horse and one to follow. I think he can crack one of the big ones. I hope his gelding went well and that he can prove his potential soon. Go Mr Elly, show the boys what he's made of
