No one trick ponies...... this year;)

The article in the Sporting post is spot on..... the field for the first ever Cape Thoroughbred Sales Co RTR is packed with potential and more than half the field should go on to even bigger things like graded races and future stars. They are clearly having a dig at theTBA/BSA RTR set up that has now become a race that lacks quality as more recent winners cannot get to win a graduation plate never mind compete in graded races. How did it become like this....simple.... the hype to win the big RTR race prize has blinded buyers into buying lesser performing horses that lack quality but put on sale to attract bigger bids.....these sales are not buyers sales but to benefit the long suffering sellers. These sales are sprinkled with pinhooked imports many of them 1st foals from less than impressive bloodlines. Many bought as weanlings from culling sales from down under.

The danger of offering big one off prize monies for select races gives rise to an increase in pinhooking....people that buy underdeveloped horses from sales cheaply and then feed nourish and build them up on pre-training farms and double, triple and even quadruple their investment by selling them as RTR race candidates.

As a gentlemans rule not many horses were ever bought and resold through the TBA/BSA set up .....but if they want to remain competitive this will start happening as it has with the CTS co....these horses are offered on book 1 book 2 CTS sales and then we see them again on RTR sales.

Even horses bought at the TBA sales are found at CTS RTR sales.

So if one cannot beat them....join them.....buy a near to weanling sort on Book 1or2 get qualification for the US$1M race send it to the farm put it on the TBA RTR get qualification then buy it back and then but it on the CTC RTR and qualify it there too....should you run out of tom but get an attactive 3 times your investment type of bid then let it go.....::o

Is this a genuine RTR sale Like last year most of the horses are put here only to qualify for the race
Last year I went intending to buy a horse Soon realised the most were not real sales as they were knocked down to the original
buyer.
Waled away and will do the same this year if a horse I fancy has passed through the sales ring before
B
By my estimate 40% by value and 30% by number were buy backs
MAY WELL BE AN UNDERESTIMATE

@ Elmer, this year is even worse....only 20-30% are really for sale the rest are bought and already paid for and are only here to get a qualification for the RTR race.....one is therefore really going to overpay for the left overs ....as those that do not have a buy back plan are going to go full tilt at what is really available for open sale.....also one has got to be very wary of the odd buy back that may have already shown the trainer or pre-trainer to be no good even at this early stage.....one can then really pay ....for some one else's throw away....::o

I don't think you guys realize how difficult it has been to sell into the "middle market" - say horses up to R150k over the past few years. Last year I had 6 on the CT RTR- all for sale at moderate reserves, and a number of which didn't sell at the earlier book 2.
With hindsight, 2 of them should not have been on the sale, Lake Sally had a crooked leg, and Granite a very weak pedigree. Both now retired.
Of the others, only Philosophy even got a single bid, and my bid reserve on her was R100k. Very little for a nice Dynasty filly. I bought her back for just R90k, half what I thought she would go for. She is a late developer and debuts tomorrow.
Knysna Lagoon, Spanish Tiger, Satchmo all bought back for the minimum bid of R20k and subsequently I put together partnerships at R50k each. All absolute bargains which could have been bought by anyone for small money.
At the risk of imposing on the site for free advertising, lots 125 and 143 are for sale with moderate bid reserves.
