This is as easy as tying your dog up and puting him out of his misery , why do they call it hunting ?

Like most of you I am against hunting. While on my way to the jockeys meet at the Big T I heard Pablo Fatides, entrepreneur, do his thing on 702 commending his respective business owner. They said that Kenya has lost 80% of its wild life since Kenya banned hunting. Is this stat true? They also implied that in this commercial world, controlled and licensed hunting is important for the survival of wildlife.
I also understand, that Botswana, like Kenya, have also banned hunting.

Difficult one ... I'm not keen on hunting as a "sport" but I love venison and also biltong. And I can sympathise with people that shoot to protect their animals or crops ... my brother-in-law was a small-time fruit farmer and couldn't afford to support all the warthogs and porcupines in the district in their liking for his pineapples. But he didn't hunt for fun, and he (and his family) ate what he shot.
At the same time, those who do find hunting things like lions or elephants fun are willing to pay big money to do it and they DO subsidise hunting reserves. I might think their motivation is kak but it preserves the species in areas where, believe me, they would be exterminated pretty quick if the land owner decided to switch to cattle or sheep. Morals evaporate when set against income ... and not only in farming. It's practical to try and set the laws up so that the playing field slopes the right way, but a sloped playing field (except at Lords) isn't moral.
Don't want to rely on this government alone to preserve SA's wild life. Wot a norrible thort.
Must say though, that I feel sick at the thought of someone hunting canned lions ... even if they are let loose to run they are half tame and don't know how to look after themselves. Yes, you might as well shoot dogs in a backyard ... they don't know you're an enemy until its too late. People that find this sort of thing fun I'd avoid doing business with if I could. Never know when they would turn on me!

Even though I'm a vegetarian I understand that sometimes animals need to be killed and it this case the consumption of the animals is acceptable. Trophy hunting is so Stone Age and people with that much money to waste could do far better conserving the animals than killing them.

Dave, it's good you are consistent (vegetarian). That I can respect, though I'm not one myself.
I'm into trophy hunting actually. I like it a lot and do it whenever I can afford to. But before you go BANG! the trophies I'm after are photographs.
It's just as possessive as the other kind, actually. But this way the animal is left for hundreds of other people to enjoy after me. It's the opposite of consumerism, which is based on the principle that what is "I, Me, Mine" cannot also be "Thou, You, Yours".
