punter caught 20% of the pick 6...he got paid out 20% of the bookies limit..which was 500k..so he got 20% of the 500k limit instead of 20% of the monumental payout if played on the tote

Yup and the TT employees that tell punters a horse is 5/10 , when 9/10 available with bookies

Play exotics on the tote and wins and places with the bookies

In my opinion some people have forgotten another side to this debate.

1. All the bookmakers who offer the open bet are essentially adding to the "punter's pot". If the pool is a million and it pays to say 10 tickets 100k each, then all the punters that won open bets outside the tote pool, say for eg cumalatively another 5 tickets, actually "added" 50% because 1.5 million got received.

2. The tote doesn't have to control liability because all income is put into a bucket, 25% comes out, ad the remainder gets paid out...the tote can't lose it's the greatest comm agent ever. Bookmakers who offer a bet based on that dividend are liable to pay without a pool. For example, it's entirely possible that a bookmaker could end up with 10 winning tickets while the tote had 2 for the entire pool.

3. It adds to the strategy of how you play if you play into the tote pool, or out of the pool just for the dividend. The bookmaker is offering you odds based on a pool less takeout divided by winners. You decided if/when to enter which bet as a matter of strategy, just like when you would by your US dollars for your holiday...it's a gamble within a gamble.

Grow up, play the game. Big winners may prefer off tote because they don't diminish the dividend, percentage players on a massive pool must decide. I'm happy to have choices.

Agree with Hibs, play exotics on the tote especially if you are going big.

Surely though the R500,000 limit on Pick 6 needs to be relooked at with the coupling rule change.

Spot on Jack.................when I heard Deez's story all I heard was......"I have a friend who is an idiot" and as he work in this industry his own admission that he didn't know about limits either,is nothing to boast about.

If you take a structure a bet that could possibly pay way beyond the limit, and then place it in that market anyway is madness!

Funny, Rob, when I heard Deez's story I heard the same old thing - Bookies quick to take, quick to short change ! The bottom line is that the bookies displayed a limit of R500k quite clearly in their rooms. So, if you got the whole P6, then you would get R500 k limit. That's the maximum. I have their terms and conditions - they pay a maximum of R500k on SAFtote dividends. NOWHERE do they state that the percentages will apply from R500k downwards. So, whatever the winning bet , the punter would be paid out exactly as per SAFtote dividends, but NOT MORE than R500k.

So, in typical bookie fashion, the lady wins 25% of the P6 and now they only want to pay out 25% of the R500k, not 25% of the SAFtote dividend, which is still wiyhin their R500k limit. To me, that is blatant crookery.

They want to stand the open bet, thus hurting Racing, so now they must PAY ! Like the tote does.

The crooks are not the tote branches......

The reason why most okes punt this way is the extension of credit that is offered by bookies.....and also short price punters never expect a dog day afternoon where payouts would exeed a bookie limit.....he is a chop and should be happy with his chop ......because the tote lady cannot stand a R5K ticket while wating for your other bets to swing in.....::o
