It's a cultural thing - I have no right to complain about people in other cultures eating horse-meat when I will happily eat a piece of a cow.

Gruesome as it may be to suggest - if a horse is not fit for racing, it's better that it is shot and becomes Lion Park food rather than suffering through the indignity and pain of pulling a coal-cart through wherever.....

Yup you're right - not enough people have the stones to do this though....

Mauritius has no breeding program. They also only import geldings (Maybe colts?) the only second career these horses may have is as a trail horse at a resort, but there is not as great a need. So the majority are also out down.
I have often battled to home our own horses to somewhere suitable. And even then I've had bad experiences.

taken from SPCA CAPE OF GOOD HOPE Facebook page, posted Friday 6th Sept '13:

UPDATE: COALMINE CANARY (FANTASIA)

By Allan Perrins CEO Cape of Good Hope SPCA & Chairman of the Western Cape Animal Welfare Forum:

“After determined investigative efforts we have tracked down the owner of Coalmine Canary (Fantasia) and will be laying charges of animal cruelty against the respondent and a co-accused today”. “We will be seeking proper restitution from the Courts including deprivation of animal ownership in perpetuity.” I will personally be keeping a watch brief over the case and intend to bolster our ranks by enlisting the help of a High Court Judge.” “Now that we know where the respondent stables his horses, we will be sending a team of Inspectors to the property to check on the welfare of any other animals on the property – and will unhesitatingly confiscate them if they are found to be wanting.”

“We estimate that every year over 2 000 race horses come off the track in SA and enter the secondary market – many face grossly uncertain futures after initially leading a life of pampered luxury. Coalmine Canary is one such example – but one too many”. “Those that left her for dead will pay for their callous indifference.”

An update on Coalmine Canary (Fantasia) from our Horse Care Unit Manager, Romayne Midgley:

We were very lucky to have the farrier, Jacques Sauer come and see Fantasia on Monday and he has offered to attend to all her farrier requirements on a complimentary basis inclusive of the cost of the various hoof supplements, shoes, pads etc. This is an amazing donation as the time is going to be extensive. As you know she has no hooves left, so it is a long process and he will be nursing her feet along for us for many months to come and in time she will require highly specialised shoes which are very costly and some will need to be manufactured from scratch by him.

I would very much like to publicly acknowledge this contribution as it will add up to close to R10,000 before he is finished. In addition he is one of the top farriers in the country so his time is very short and very valuable. A brief resume is he has been a practising farrier for 16 years, his tertiary education was to qualify as a nutritionals so he is exceptionally well placed to advise on how to best feed a recovering horse as well as the various supplements that can be used to stimulate hoof growth and detox her system. He is also qualified in various body works such as equine massage and rieke. He is one of three internationally certified farriers in the Western Cape and is a highly accomplished, recognised and respected equestrian.

Fantasia went for an X-ray of her off hind (back right leg) on Tuesday which was giving us a huge amount of trouble. From the X-ray we found a piece of metal stuck in her leg, which has now been removed.

We leave Fantasia’s stable door open during the day and on Sunday morning at around 11H00 I was so excited to see her hobble out of her stable all on her own and join Ou Toppie for a nibble of green grass. She came back in on her own accord after about an hour and was clearly exhausted by her excursion but this is such a positive step as while she is still hobbling she is able to face walking over the cement to get to the grass something she just could not do this time last week. On Monday she did the same but this time she went out for about 2 hours and then back for lunch and then out again this afternoon.

Is it only racehorses that face uncertain futures, or do other horses that change hands also end up in the wrong places? just saying like..
