Assistant starter screwed up....should never have raised his flag.....VC backed out his gate.....i hope an official enquiry is opened as this sort of mistake is unacceptable.

If the starter blows a false start then the starter is correct. Its under HIS auspices and no-one else's. In fact, if the starter DID NOT blow a false start for this then THAT would have been an absolute travesty to racing. Accolades, bouquets and kudos for the starter.....

how do yopu get a horse to reverse out of a stall on demand? It was difficult enough for them to load him so how could"they" have managed to get the assistant starter to raise the flag as he was taking himself out of the race? The biggest owner in SA is on course to see a race that he says he wants to win and an assistant starter decides that he will do a dirty with all eyers on the outside stalls. Sometimes an umbrella is just an umbrella.

But dont you all know, a very strong rumour has it that Anton Marcus did NOT ride Variety Club.
The jock who "reversed" VC out of the gate was in fact Chuck Norris.

The starter should never press the button before the white flag is raised but after it has been raised he has every right to declare a false start if he deems a horse's chances to have been compromised subsequent to the raising of the flag. It was a hundred percent the correct call.
