Pop into Stornoway - if you dont go by plane then take a train from Edinburgh/Glasgow to Inverness. Stay in one of the hostels overnight in Inverness. In the morning take a bus to Ullapool on the North West coast and them from there catch the ferry to Stornoway in the Western Isles/Outer Hebrides. And the eat the black pudding for breakfast....

i went to Stornoway in the middle of one summer. I booked for a week. Its was so kak that i left after 3 days. The wind did not stop blowing. The beaches are stunning but the wind made it very misreable.

Hahahaha. Ja, I think its a place one either loves or hates. And those trees are all bent in the direction of the prevailing wind. I also heard that when there is no wind everyone still leaves early because they have gone stark raving mad being bitten by millions of midge flies...

The Solway Coast is very nice with some nice places to stay like Kippford. The coast road from Stranraer up Glasgow is fantastic with many nice places to visit like Troon, Ayr Largs and plenty of other places. Once you get to Glasgow just head straight out cause its a shit hole. Head over the Erskine Bridge to Loch Lomand and onto Argyle which imo is one of the most beautiful places on earth (dont know about the winter time though). The West coast is far nicer than the East coast but Scotland is not that big so you could manage both sides in a week. Peterhead on the East coast provided me with the best fish n chips I have ever had. Dufftown is a nice place which is close to the Glen Livet Distillery where you can go on a tour. There is a hotel, Minmore House, within walking distance. To get there you obviously need a car. On the Borders towns like Hawick and Jedburgh are worth a visit as is Berwick. Peebles, Melrose, Galashiels, all have good pubs and restuarants as well as plenty of historic sights.

Obviously you must spend most of your time in Edinburgh a real gem of a City. I am not praising Scotland because I am Scottish. I am not. You will enjoy and if the right bird comes along you can always nip down to Gretna for an impromptu marriage.

WARNING WARNING

The A9 that takes you via Perth and up to Inverness is a death trap. Drive with care. The road is fine but its the dick heads that speend and overtake.

Arbroath is another interesting town to vist (on the coast north of Dundee) Inverness is a stunning Town and the drive from Inverness to Fort William is as scenic as you could wish for taking in Drumnadrochit and Fort Augustus. Hopefully the snow will stay away.
