What Is A Good Time - Mile
12 years 6 months ago
After yesterday's great win by Variety Club which he ran in 97.69, what would the pundits say is a good time for a mile. I would like to know what the Hangman's, War Horse, Igugu, Pricess Victoria etc have run over his distance.
To be competitive over a mile, what should a horse be running to
Cheers

Will try find the others for you but course record there is 96.2. Scottsville 93.8 seconds (due to the better standard of horses in Natal)
So much of a good time is made up of the early pace. Syd Laird once said to me when I asked him about time that " only people in jail should worry about times especially as you go further in distance"

Difficult the time thing...too many variables, but an indication nevertheless.

You can't compare times from different race courses :S
Greyville isn't exactly a flat track, there's major uphills around the 1600m, 1300m and a few other spots

I would assume that given all the factors, pace, going, track, etc...... Any horse running a 95 to 97 would be a good time

You can never ever consider time if its not the same track, same conditions and same day........
for example
Pocket Power winning times over Kenilworth 1600m(4 queens plates inc)
101,47
99,3
100,61
99,2
99,83
98,82
98,12
98,38
97,16
98,26
AVE 99,16
VARIETY CLUB winning times over Kenilworth 1600m
96,65
99,61
97,92
97,69
AVE 97,97
That means Pocket power would have been Beaten on ave 6 LENGHS by Variety club on their winning runs over this course...
Their is about 15+lenghs dif in pocket powers and variety clubs winning runs on same c/d if you take slowest and fastest.......
for example
Pocket Power winning times over Kenilworth 1600m(4 queens plates inc)
101,47
99,3
100,61
99,2
99,83

Imagine PP being beaten consistenly by +- 6 lenghts...over 1600m

You've just highlighted why studying time is such a futile exercize:D

Rule of thumb is 12 seconds per furlong so 96secs, standard time anywhere in the world on a flat track
Sprints 11,5secs and over 2000m 12,5secs/furlong
Arabians run at 13secs/furlong
If a front runner runs a mile in 96secs... 9/10 races you will finish 1st
Variables like going, wind and track inclines affect time

Variety club cape guineas 99.61.....Jay Peg 97.46........Pocket Power never won the Guineas but ran the
Green Point in 99.83......VC and JP both strong front running types of horses .......bottom line is same course, different day, different time.
