AS Greg's post demonstrates..................similar problems .....different excuses.
It is uncanny how one industry can so consistently cock up its forecasting and planning!

I wonder if the turnover/race day profits are lower if the event is not held at night?

Hibs, i have often wondered how they manage in Hong Kong & Singapore? Are we just that bad at maintaining tracks?

I see the Poland/England football game was called off because of a waterlogged pitch and this is in a stadium with a retractable roof!!!! Can you imagine the comments on this site if GC had done that!

I know that everyone was really looking forward to going back to Greyville and management took into account normal conditions when predicting when it should be ready by. If the weather does not play ball then the timing will be out. How good and reliable do you find weather forecasters? In my opinion they battle to get it perfect until 5 mins after it has happened and certainly not 2 months ahead.

Craig, all due respect, it is easy to blame the weather when you have not planned properly. Clearly it is almost a four week delay which to me is a total miscalculation of when the track would have been ready. There has not been any exceptional rainfall for the time of year, no floods and last weekend i was using sunblock so the weather is a weak excuse.
I will be sure to inform all the avid gardeners out there not to plant anything in KZN in September (Spring) because it will not grow....:)o

Tigershark, when you are dealing a huge hole dug into the ground (6000sqm) and you get the rains we have had lately(remember the Sharks game 1 km os so away) and that fills up you do have to get rid of that before you can keep working. The water table is high so it just kept filling up as the water drained in. Set the construction back badly. We have not had a lot the 30 degree plus temperatures we normally start getting now to help dry everything and promote real growth. You are right in that not much grows well until October. Cut my grass(well established) at home for the 1st time in months only 3 weeeks ago. I also am not sure how you make it a nearly 4 week delay? From 30/10 to 18/11 is not even 3 weeks on my calculations.

This is an old thread from last year. Graeme Hawkins said it was being looked at. Don't worry it won't happen this year.

Your right Craig, i have no idea because i dont dig 6000 sq/m holes for myself that i cant get out of......
So your saying that the team actully expected to be finished the project in 4 weeks and to be racing again?
I apreciate that you are conveying that this was not an easy task taking the conditions into account, but if you read the statement, the planting was done on the 25th of September........ when was it really done if the 6000 sq/m hole kept on filling up with water? If the grass had been replanted on 25 September there should have been no hole.... was the construction delayed and the hole filling up with water after re-planting was completed? Maybe you know & maybe you but frankly somewhere someone had no idea of how long this project would take.
All too confusing for me......
