On the subject of apprentices, I think Donovan Dillon is the best we have seen in years. He can ride them from the front and is equally effective when coming from off the pace. I look forward to watching his progress in the years to come.

it also helps that he claimed 4kgs for 10 winners more than the appies before him and is still claiming 2.5...

lot of these kids look promising until they loose their claim then the winners and opportunities dry up and only the really talented ones survive...JP Van der Merwe the most recent example of this

jessica goslett, vicky minott..the examples are endless..all appies go thru a winning streak and when the claims dry up so do the winners..

If a horse is carded to carry 64KG's in a race one should have the option of putting 2 appies up and claiming 8KG's :

Surely then by some peoples logic we should look at the apprentices that have 10 winners under their belt and keep an eye out whilst they still get hte extra 1.5kg?
Some of these jocks are good, they just want to ride which helps and they more often than not they listen ot the trainer and take instruction better than some of the seasoned jocks (opinion)
I like Teaque Gold as an up and comer!

One will always take a chance putting an appy up...When there are no hiccups, they can bring home the bacon...But the true measure of experience is how fast one can recover from a mistake.
Tata an appy...Tata a chance:D But there are many occasions that I would take the chance. Muis Roberts, Pat Lunn and Des Edges are a few trainers who put them to good use and squeeze a few more winners out.

Titch, is this partly because it is easier to explain to a senior jock that you are using an appie to get the weight off than it is saying you are being replaced by a new kid on the block? Do cowardice and politics play major roles? It is obviously not surprising that winners dry up if the opportunities do. Btw, is there somewhere I can find a list of stable jocks?

Has anyone else found that backing Appies, where their horses are drawn well, can sit and race handy then go for home early is fine but in tactical /slow run distance races or where they are drawn wide and have to think more, the majority seem to struggle.
