Richard Hughes was mentioned by the commentator but let's just be fair and say that it is very difficult, given the amount of racing going on at any one time, for the studio presenter to be able to stay abreast of all the jockey changes overseas. It's not as if you are presented with a jockey changes sheet for all the overseas racing venues, as you are with the SA changes (it would be nice if we had the staff complement to be able to prepare one, but we don't).
There's precious little time to trawl the Internet looking for the day's changes, with required announcements coming at you thick and fast. And many of the changes are made on the racecourse. This one was made known early, but again, the presenter would have to go on the Internet long before the start of his 09h30 call and peruse the various headlines to glean that Ryan Moore had been injured. Given that one has to contend with the Jo'burg traffic just to get to the studio in Rivonia (and Cecil has to travel from the south of the city to the north) one's time for research is at a premium.
I like to work off Timeform's fields sheet for the various venues, which provides the breeding of the runners, and which is far more detailed than the official TAB sheet. It is generally a more updated version, with the early jockey changes, but one has to fill in race numbers and adjust start times to SA time, so that's an added complication.
I know I'll be accused of jumping to the defence of T/T and my colleagues, Pirates, but I speak from experience. One tries to stay abreast of what's happening abroad, but some things get missed purely because of lack of time. We probably do the longest shifts of any TV channel in the country, as it is, and it can sometimes be very fraught. Just read the interview with Shaheen, on this site, for confirmation of how buggered you can feel at the end of a day.
