the last time I watched Marshall and co discuss the july card Marshall insisted that seal will not win on any other surface than soft to muddy, and the mud was definetly on someones face when seal won........so you could be absolutely correct that seal would win, will be playing big swinger with Kolkata.......

Dean Kannemeyer holds two trump cards for the Ladbrokes Gold Cup over 3200m at the Super Saturday meeting at Greyville this weekend with Blake and In Writing and he said he could not be happier with their respective preparations.
The five-year-old Dynasty gelding Blake, the ruling favourite for the country’s premier staying race, has had three runs this Champion’s Season and has really caught the eye.
In his pipe opener, returning from a four month break, he ran 5,8 lengths back in the Listed Sledgehammer over 1800m at Scottsville.
He then came out and won the Grade 3 Lonsdale Stirrup Cup over 2400m at Greyville.
In this race he showed his winning attitude, not hesitating when asked to go through a tight gap by jockey Karl Neisius.
He was given a three point merit rated raise for that effort, but showed his well being and resolve in his next start again when running on strongly for second in the Grade 3 Schweppes 2200m, finishing just 0,75 lengths behind the smart three-year-old Tribal Dance.
That earned him another two point raise.
However Kannemeyer said, “He never runs a bad race. He is a better horse than he was six months ago and he stays.”
Blake does have 58,5kg to carry, but he has defied the handicapper on many occasions, having won six of his ten starts since April last year, at which stage he was already well into his four-year-old year.
In Writing, a six-year-old Argentinian-bred gelding by Editor’s Note, arrived in Durban on the back of a facile win in the Grade 3 Chairman’s Cup over 3200m at Kenilworth, although he was gifted an easy lead there in a slow run race.
He won a good race in his Champion’s Season pipe opener, winning a Pinnacle Stakes race over 2500m at Clairwood, beating last year’s Gold Cup winner Aslan by 0,75 lengths.
He was caught wide and never got into the race in the Betting World 1900, but then went close to winning the Grade 2 Gold Vase over 3000m at Greyville on Vodacom Durban July day.
He stole a big lead at the top of the straight in that race, similar to how he had done in the Chairman’s, and he was only caught late by Seal, who was strongly fancied on the day by his yard.
He has to carry 57,5kg, but will be 1kg better off with Seal in the Gold Cup.
“Blake and In Writing are both carrying a bit of weight, but have both come through their program very well,” said Kannemeyer. “I was very happy with their last runs, which were both prep runs. They are sound, doing very well and I couldn’t have asked for their preparations to go better.”
Kannemeyer won the Gold Cup with the Stage Colony mare Colonial Girl in the year 2000.
Blake will give part-owner Raymond Deacon a dream double if he wins.
Deacon won the Vodacom Durban July with Big City Life in 2009, and having come from an era where the Gold Cup was any Durbanite’s idea of the country’s second most prestigious race, he would love to add it to the 100 odd winners of his ownership career.

Much higher weights than the horses who had won or placed in the Gold Vase, as shown by the little old race card on July day. A good reflection to who the best horse in the race is, is the horses guaranteed staying ability backed by success over shorter trips. That however doesn't exactly settle the weight question, but should help narrow things down.
