Really sorry to read this Titch. Had Jack Russels for years and are great Dogs. Had 2 go blind and 1 handled it well as he slowly went blind and I think that helped. The 2nd one went blind over night and did not. You did the right thing althought extremely hard. Condolences to you both.

Hi Titch. Sometimes I think we measure our lives by the cycle of dogs we have owned, and I have taken many to the vet, over the years to end the suffering and pain of old age. It is the most horrible thing to have to do and especially so when the last look they give you, just before passing on, is one of ambiguity. You can hopefully interpret it as relief but there is just that inkling that it might be accusatory, and that is when it really becomes painful. Jack Russells, in particular, worm their way into your heart, and the last dog to whom I had to bid farewell was a 14-year-old by the name of Higgins, about whom I could write a book. He was special and my great affection for him will never be truly replaced, but life moves on, and now I have a cross Jack Russell/dachsie male, 18 months old, who is just as much a character, but a lot more expensive to have around as his favourite "treat" seems to be the most expensive pair of my wife's shoes that he can extract from her shoe closet, which he finds ways and means of prising open.

Titch, I'm so sorry for your loss. You gave your boy a wonderful life, but most importantly, you cared enough to make the hardest decision when the time came. This has helped me through some tough times and I hope it might bring you some comfort too:-

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Titch, I feel your pain.... we lost our dog last year Tuesday before the Durban July. We went out to a restaurant, firmly believing that all 3 dogs were inside the house. when we returned, we could not find the one, until we found him floating in the swimming pool. He was 16 years old, he was getting on & I knew he would not see the next Christmas, but I did not have the balls to take him to the vet. I think he did us all a favour by going out this way.

my thoughts are with you and the wife.
