He did not call the Winner Magi - How can you excuse that?

@ Bloodshot "I'm now hunting for tickets on Jan Smut drive. I listened on the phone and after the call tossed them out the window so zero chance of getting my PA ticket now. WTF"
Well that will teach you about littering !!
But jokes a side the oke is pathetic, unfortunately it's part of the new South African characteristic to accept below par services in most aspects of life :S

He got the colours wrong !! There is no excuse. In his defense I believe there were three very similar colours in the race... but THAT is not an excuse.... as I said when he screws up... he does so royally,

Magi, all due respect to you sir but Dumpy is meant to be a professional and call what is happening through the race, I hardly ever have a clue where my horse is when he is commentating because he seemingly finds it tough to talk as quick as he thinks... or he simply can't tell what is happening. And he is forever saying after the finish... "right, let's have a look what happened"... and calls the result via the slow-mo replay. Come on guys, I don't want to be nasty, but he simply doesn't do the job I assume he is paid for. He's rubbish and has to be replaced and that's all there is to it. I can't even believe this is open to debate/discussion!

Englander, I eg to differ. That may very well happen when he is calling an 18 horse 1200m race that he does not cover them all. I assume you know of this URL where you can listen to the commentaries ... choose a few races where there are 14 or less horses and listen carefully.............. THEN ... go to the VAAL commentaries for Thursday .. and listen to any commentary even 8 horses ....in my opinion umpy sounds the consummate professional as opposed to the VAAL caller... and the same goes for KZN..bearing in mind that his job is to describe to the listener what is happening in the race.
Hokay, I finished now... and no Dumpy is NOT a relative (

If you watch the races and listen to him sometimes you wonder if you are blind - The worst is when you watch the replays after you've listened on the phone and cannot believe he's got in so wrong - There is not debate - There is no other race caller in SA that gets the RESULTS wrong as often as he does. I would back Shaw to beat him every day with Shaw calling from JHB!!

Do you know they fly the 2 Peters and R Smit to PE to commentate for the overseas feed ? They alternate week by week.
21 Apr 2008 13:47:27
How much do these okes get paid, that could be part of the problem...Pay peanuts you get monkeys...top dollar = top caller. I must say Aalan Schoeman is a frigging hoot, calls every horse except the winner and then says " here comes the line " and hey presto some other nag gets there...hahahhahahahhaha.

Agree with you Charl the Breeders was a bit weak - Dumpy has me cold as the guy has gone unchallenged for years - he only calls twice a week and he still battles to get it right - the amount of incorrect calls he makes are amazing - he battles to see horses quickning and cannot pick up a winner unless it's 4 clear with 50 to go. Very bad and should have been replaced years ago

Glad you posted that OR (tu) Being relatively new to SA racing I hadn't really considered how long Dumpy has been doing the calling... what is it now, a decade, two...? What people might fail to realise is that essentially I think not only is he a crap commentator but he is taking the proverbial out of us. Magi, I hear what you say about 18 runners etc but how many cards does this guy call in a week? Can he really not learn the colours sufficiently pre-race? Come on, my 16 year old nephew could learn the colours of two cards a week or whatever. It seems to me he tries to learn each card in the 30 minutes before a race and can't do it. And he has been commentating long enough to know the angles of the courses and he should be able to call which horse is ahead even if they are on opposite sides of a track. He often calls one ahead and I think I must have got the colours wrong cos there's no way its leading. (I must have got the colours wrong, how "ironic" is that???) The bottom line, if he applied for a job in the UK and I assume the US, Oz etc as a race commentator he wouldn't even get an interview, it is about professionalism and I get the impression he has none and really doesn't care. If he did, we wouldn't be reading stories from 4 years ago saying the same, he would have improved. Listen to the commentators on William Hill radio who sometimes call three or four cards a day!! This guy is taking the p*ss out of all of us. Before I thought of him as a bit of a joke but when you really think about it, he's the one laughing at us cos he is still getting away with it and that does p*ss me off. Get a petition going and finally get rid of him.
And Magi... if he's not the worst, then what does that say about the others?? :
