Sage Throne - New Merit Rating

The pro's out there , what would you have rated him after his fourth on Saturday ( 1.75 l behind the winner) . He was a 96 and now a 105.
A hefty rise I think , however the connections are not complaining as it will allow him to compete in the big races . Pirates , what would you have given him ? I thought he would go to 102 so was surprised when I saw the 106. The Presidents Cup was not the strongest group1 I have seen.

Last time you mentioned he was a Gold Cup horse. Three horses qualified for the Gold Cup last year with a rating of under 90, so in my opinion his 4th place was a killer blow to his Gold Cup aspirations. Not saying he cannot win it but the extra 5kg's over 3200 metres will be a huge burden.

the handicaper is spot on with the new rating in my opinion,as they crossed the line i knew you were in trouble with the handicaper as you were handicaped to run last not 4th ...he looks like a horse that enjoys a galloping course with a nice long straight to give off his best .

if you play with the big boys you have to take the big punches. the handicap is correct, why i dont understand do owners do this to horses?

Interesting posts as I feel the same . I always felt that he is a Gold Cup horse and he would have made the field off a 96 mark.
This rating has come at the wrong time although it might get him into the VDJ.

owners should know what a good performance will do to a horses MR in a WFA race before they accept at those conditions..

the race was run at a very slow time in fact the winners time was only 0.32 sec quicker than hawker hunter 2 races later...also only 5 lengths covered the first 9 past the post whch suggests to me the form of the race might not stand up...whether the hcappers look at the points i have made or just take the result as face value i dont know

I like Sage Throne, have always rated him..my question is, which will be the races we can look out for him b4 da Gold Cup? As the Gold Cup will be very competitive with the likes of Atyeb/Gorongosa/blake,etc.. Not necessarily to have a punt, but to see how he is coming along?
