You're right - I don't 'tip' - when I have the time (between work and family commitments) I write the occasional piece (use it - don't use it) on how I see the day unfolding - and imo in most cases it's not the 'boys in the know' or the 'graft' that upsets the formbook - rather accept that we are not dealing with machines here, but horses and humans - what I am mostly trying to point out is when imo a horse is 'no value' (i.e. Main Dane) and when there is 'value' - then it's for you to make up your own mind whether you agree with me, or not

Greg
Can you please explain to me how luck helps oneself in finding winners.
I always thought luck is what is needed in a "game of chance" like the slots machines or tables, unless racing is now a "game of chance".
There is however something called "luck in the running" etc, like when a horse has to get over from an impossible draw.

Form studying is the best source of information.

Hey Agra,
Of course we try increase our chance of winning by studying form but there are variables that are out of our control such as what you mentioned, luck in running.

• Guessing if a horses is fit (we don't hear from every trainer).
• Jockeys are human and make mistakes.
• Is the horse trying.

Plenty others....

You don't think racing/punting has a certain element of chance in it?

I guess you right .
Racing can become a lottery when the well being of horses are not furnished.

A tipster and a line maker are two different things, often confused.

The line maker studies form and produces sheets for all the races.
The idea is to help the punter, for commercial purposes of course.
If he belongs to race course circuit, it is to make people bet more. If he is the owner of an internet site, to attract advertisement.

The tipster is someone who identifies one-two-three winners from the entire program and passes the info to you.
Tipstering is tricky.
You have to be competent in finding winners but also competent in passing races.
I 've seen competent tipsters who make the mistake of not keeping silent when they should.

In any case there is no unique method.
You are supposed to act like a judge and you have to listen to many opinions, before you reach a verdict.
First it's the morning line (with the help of some local tipster maybe), then you have to look at the horses, then you have to look at the price movements.

In modern times we bet from home or from betting shops and the racecourse can be the local race course or maybe one situated thousands of miles away.
Some people say we should get involved only in local affairs.
Not bad thinking, but sometimes foreign racing too gives opportunities.

We depend on tv.
Tv screens these days tend to be filled with silly graphics, obscuring view.
Fewer from South African tv (good of them).
I am the leader of an informal itnernational crusade to clean racing tv from garbage graphics.
We all have simultaneous access to the web these days and surely they don't expect me to arrive to a betting shop at 5 minutes to the hour, not knowing what the next race card is !

Frodo,

You sound fairly busy so I am sure you dont spend many many hours pondering form.
Do you mind sharing the things you do see/not see as being warning signs/gree lights. Sort of short cuts to effective form study.
There is nothing more frustrating than studying and the results are just bizzare. One really questions whether has time for the nonsense then...

My point exactly - trainers/jocks and others working with the horses have a certain knowledge that we as punters do not.
If the sport aspires to be transparent, then surely something as bizzare as enforcing trainers to make summaries of their runners wellness should be made compulsory. Why the heck should they hold that information, that has a direct financial impact on so many in the market? Then it is simply insider trading - sortoff?
