Racing inexperience was in this instance definitely the undoing of this horse, especially against his much more experienced opponents.Having said that,I get the impression that this horse is not a sprinter despite his breeding suggesting so.He has such a big action that he really looks like he will be much more comfortable around the bend and over a 1400/1600 trip.

THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED:
a) LEGAL ACTION, the winner (M van Rensburg). Selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Trainer C E Erasmus advised (JK).
b) SKITT SKIZZLE (R Fradd) – jumped outwards and is bumped by MINI BLACK (ridden by Jockey F Herholdt) in the latter stages. SKITT SKIZZLE baulked for a clear run continuously from approximately the 350 metre mark onwards.

Latter stages of what, the start?

What's the difference? That's what a merit rating is, but it can be very hard to judge a horse who wins first time out by half the racecourse beating the blind school. Even if the 2nd horse won next time out (on sand). However, Celtic King makes for a reasonable line horse as he is at least quite consistent and there is no doubt that Skitt Skizzle is at least an 84. And let's not forget that Legal Action was well weighted back in a handicap anyway.

Using the handicappers merit rating, wrong more often than not.... There are guys on the forum that use there own system, are they more accurate?

Any rating system worth spit had to give Skitt Skizzle a rating of at least well into the 80s after his first run. Inexperience may have been his downfall. First time out was an excercise gallop, second time around he had to knuckle down and race against horses with far more experience, and in any case things didn't go his way. Whether he was or was not given an indifferent ride, it is a bit absurd to expect him to show the same sort of dominant pace against this field that he showed against moderate maidens.

the Tarry yard in their last 200 runners have had 10 odds on shots and have had 6 winning and 4 losing...not the worst record?
Give everything but up!

Skittle won by 10 lengths in a slow time against average horses
distance means nothing
Torman won by 11 lengths and got beaten 3 times

So must the handicappers give Skitt Skizzle the same rating as Celtic King because "distance means nothing?" Do me a favour.
Titch, 6/10 winning odds on shots is probably about right, but of course we'd need the average SPs of the odds on horses in question to gauge whether it is a statistically sound strike rate. We glibly talk about odds ons as if they are all the same thing, but there's a mighty difference between 9/10 and 1/5.

Thought the horse was never travelling well at all and probably over rated.
