Fourie story in UK press
13 years 5 months ago
As reported in UK's Racing Post yesterday. (You have to wonder about the "press" here though.)
South Africa: Title-chasing Richard Fouriehas stunned the racing industry by walking out on his job with top trainer Justin Snaith.
Fourie, 26, has been sharing the Snaith rides with Felix Coetzee and has had a long association with the stable, winning four Grade 1 races for them.
He would not explain his decision, saying only: "It was my choice but I would rather not say anything more."
Snaith, who unsuccessfully tried to persuade Fourie to change his mind, added: "We told him it wasn't a good idea but his mind was made up. I think he is mad."
The stable believes that Fourie took exception to their criticism of his riding of Gimmethegreenlight in the Cape Guineas and in the Selangor Cup, and to their having considered replacing him on the colt in Saturday week's Queen's Plate.
Karl Neisius was among those approached - but Fourie had been told that he would keep the ride before heinformed Snaith that he was quitting.
Fourie has ridden 66 winners this season and is third in the table, five behind leader Anthony Delpech.
His championship odds have been cut from 33-1 to 5-1 in recent weeks but are expected to lengthen without the backing of the Snaith stable which has one of the biggest strings in the country.
Snaith has saddled 66 winners this term, second only to Mike de Kock (68).

Young jocks need more mentorship. They are Young, do well but all too often their emotions get them into trouble.

richard fourie is the most talented young rider to emerge from this country in the last 10 years...like many others between the ages of 20 to 30 he has been mismanaged and ill advised as regards to his riding career and if he doesnt correct this shortly he will go down as another great talent who never reached the heights he should of in his career...grant harrison where are you ?

For me there is no greater talent in this country right now than Grant van Niekerk......He in my mind is top, top, top class!! (I know that is not what this thread is about).
Hope he gets handled properly and that he keeps the main goal in mind. WINNING!!!

If i was Fourie i would go back to the Snaith stable and apologise . They look like a very down to earth people and bloody hell don't they have the right to comment if a jock mucks up a ride .
i mean i've heard Marcus and Delpech and even Striker apologie for bad rides in the past .
Richard i hope you make the right decisions !
