ANABOLIC STEROIDS
13 years 5 months ago
Anabolic steroids should be outlawed in racing stables.I have been aware for sometime now that the use of Testan ,an anabolic steroid is commonplace in South African racing stables and being administered by vetenarians!! I would like your comment and will reply with further info tomorrow.

Is this just in SA how is this viewed in the UK and USA?
Do you regard it as cheating, as in Don Johnson?

im pretty sure its common everywhere..if the horse raced on it then yes it would be like don johnson..but they dont..there is a long withdrawal date..its not used to enhance horses performances etc like people believe and spread rubbish about...its most common when a horse isnt going to run for a good few months or a horse is having a break etc...eg if a filly is small and needs bulking up,or a colt is slightly light/narrow..then you can give it something to help bulken up..long before it runs

The authorities will surely detect if a horse has Testsan in it's blood system.

Im not sure of your spelling of Testsan...however Testan is a vet injectable steroid testosterone cypiomate..this drug obviously has indications where it is used which you can look up in the package insert otherwise it would not have been registered by the Medical Authorities in the countries where it is available.
Many different drugs are used by many different athletes in many different sports to try and improve the outcome in competitions. All drugs have a half - life which determines how long it takes for the body to excrete the drug so it is un - detectable in blood or urine tests. Clenbuterol, T3 and T4 and Ketotifen are the latest combination being used in different formats by some athletes. They are all obviously banned from being used in a competition and therefore if an athlete makes use of them to optimise his/her training they would have to stop taking them at the correct time before the competition so that the drug has been completely excreted by the body.
There are arguments pro the use and against the use..

most bulking steriods are taken as prolonged courses while a horse is being subjected to some form of exercise to make them effective....however once you ween the horse from the medication and start a more rigerous exercise programme to prep for racing the bulking benefits are lost as then the horse starts shedding condition....a no win situation....There are however natural feed additives that can be used on a daily basis and are perfectly legal that help bulk and nourish "light" horses.

Now for the reality.Testan is the most commonly used anabolic steroid in South African racing. Now for the cheating part, it is being injected while a horse is racing in SMALL doses. This is because the NHA has threshold testing for this abuse. In small doses it comes in under the threshold but DOES have an anabolic effect on the horse. To answer the question of the english stance. Anabolic Steroids are outlawed and if found are punishable by in most cases a SUSPENSION of ones license
